Photographer’s Note

I went back to Birdlands Reserve for the first time after the summer fires of Feb.2009. Large areas are just blackened tree trunks, burnt terrain denuded of undergrowth. Much of the wildlife had perished and efforts have been under way to rehabilitate the injured birds and marsupials. Much of the reserve is fenced off and penalties apply to anyone setting foot in these areas where there is danger of falling limbs from damaged gumtrees. I knew it would be a sad experience to revisit one of my favourite places, but it is still loved by the local people and even on this foggy, wet morning people were there, reconnecting.
The area you see is quite green. It is near the car park. Further in, it's a bleak show. What concerns me is that most of the nesting places have vanished and soon it will be spring time.
