Photographer’s Note

This a view of the Macquarie Light station on Sydney Harbour. I was constructed in 1818 and was the first lighthouse to be built in Australia. It was commissioned by the second Governor of the colony, Lachian Macquarie. The design was the work of Australia's first architect, Francis Greenway, who had been transported to the convict settlement of New South Wales as a convicted forger. He rose to become the colony’s first official architect and designed a number of Australia's earliest important buildings. In appreciation, at the official opening of this lighthouse ,Governor Macquarie gave Francis Greenway a full pardon and he became a free man. The lighthouse is still in use today and guides shipping into Sydney harbour.
