The Glenelg Jetty is in the city of Holdfast Bay which itself seems to be a suburb of Adelaide. It’s hard for a visitor to know where one starts and another ends. The beach around the jetty and Jetty Road itself are very much alive throughout the day. In the early evening, as can be seen in this shot, the jetty still provides an attraction for families and couples taking a late afternoon or early evening stroll.

This shot was taken in early April, which is autumn, and still warm in Adelaide. It is a very comfortable place to take a stroll. I was sitting out just taking in the ambience after going out for dinner down the beach. I saw the sun starting to set and had time to set up and take this shot before we lost it. In fact, with a western exposure, and the sun setting on the sea here there is a lot of time for this kind of mood.

With respect to the light being out, that’s the way it was, and in keeping with TE TOS I left it out for this posting. I’ve turned in on in the workshop.

Workflow was as follow:
Shot taken in Raw - NEF files adjusted for exposure and shadow only (maximums)
Adjusted levels to white and black points
Adjusted curves
Added an overlay layer and dodged and burned with 10% opacity black and white brush
Added a layer for sharpening with USM
Modified sharpening with a layer mask (25% opacity black brush)
Saved as a tiff
For this post, resized, deleted the original USM layer and created a new one (with the layer mask), framed and saved as a jpeg for small post.

great colors nice shadows good focus

hello John,

Very good. What I like, a small detail, is that one single light is left off. Excellent presentation, the image has good depth and a fine grain, crystal clear. The sky colour gradients in orange and yellow hues is stunning. I like the sliver of water, it adds another dimension to the scene. A good frame, I may have however not chose the red section, replacing it with black. well done!

Wow John, you are the perfect electrician that I need to help me here at home! Of course, the picture is also wonderful with very real sunset colours. The few clouds are terrific and fill up the sky very nicely. Well done.

Great colour, and I like the use of the pier to add some interest to the foreground. The pier tends to lead us into the frame and give this some depth as well as a nice silhoette for the sky. Well done!

Hi John
Great pov of this jetty, creating lots of depth. I like how the silhouettes stand out so well against the orange skyline. Your ws is a good idea replacing the light bulb using photoshop.
Regards
Nikki

Hi John,

Beautiful colors .. wonderful silhouettes .. it is amazing how focusing the one burned out light is.

take care,

John

Gorgeous sunset colors with a nice composition.
Street lights look very attractive here.
Well done!

hi john

great colours and silhouettes in this shot. i remember going down to glenelg every now and then when i used to live in adelaide. so this brings back some good memories. i also like how something so small like a missing light has created a good discussion. and here's my 2 cents: it works well. it's well placed and doesn't distract at all. great job!

Hi John!
Fantastic colours and silhouettes. There's a lamp that's not working there, nice detail. There are so many people there. Colours are fantastic!

Ola John que belos tons de laranja , ficou muito bonito este pier , gostei de ver as pessoas a caminhar em cima dele , parabens!!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Hi John,
My very first posting on TE was of this jetty at sunset. It is a great spot, one of my favorites, especially on New Years Eve when they have fireworks off the end of the Jetty. It is great to see so many people on the jetty enjoying the moment.

The sunset you captured is superb, wonderful POV, (I have to remember that one). It is anoying when one of the lights are out, I hope they have fixed it by the time I visit for another sunset image.

Cheers,
Debbie

Hi John,
Wonderful night sky with beautiful orange colors to make the perfect backdrop to this jetty full of relaxing people enjoying the perfect mood.
Regards, Tom

Hello John,
A pleasant lowlight exposure, showing the pier that obviously is the place to gather to enjoy the sunset!
Well composed image with sharp fine silhouetted details, good texture in the sky...
I also notice how nicely light reflects off the water!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Hello John,
I must say this is a perfect sunset moment captured. Very warm colours and nice contrast between the orange sky and dark side on fg. People walking's silhouttes just make it more beauty. Well done and thanks for this shot and for the note too.

One thing i really miss about Adelaide are the beautiful sunsets.
The colours of your photo are quite amazing. i also like the lines of the jetty and the light posts. I had to laugh when i first saw this photo because the first thing that came to mind was all the yiros i have eaten on the left hand wall.
Thanks for the memories!
Great pic - well done!
