Today’s picture was taken in Cape Range Peninsula, Exmouth, Western Australia.

In WS is the B&W version and I would like to know which one you do prefer.

The Vlaming Head Lighthouse, located 14km north of Exmouth, was built in 1912 as a direct result of the wrecking in 1907 of the cattle ship SS Mildura which struck the coral reef off the coast of North West Cape. All the SS Mildura crew members were rescued but the 481 Kimberley cattle were left to die.

Because of this disaster and the subsequent public outcry, the Harbour and Lights Department was forced to reassess the site and the decision to build a lighthouse at Vlaming Head was made. The lighthouse was completed in 1912 and the light started for the first time on the 10 December of that year.

Vlaming Head was physically very isolated and difficult to reach. At the time of its construction, the nearest port was some 200 miles away and the closest beach for landing supplies was over 3 miles from the proposed site. Provision of fresh water for the labourers and later the lighthouse keepers, was a major obstacle that needed to be overcome. Supplies during construction were shipped from Fremantle, sent to Ashburton by steamer and back to North West Cape by schooner, where they were landed on the beach. To solve the problem of getting supplies from the beach to the lighthouse a small horse drawn tramway was built. Water for the labourers was later provided by a salt water condenser, but the water quality was not good. Large underground tanks were then built for the lighthouse keepers and their families, drawing on the artesian water in the area, but the condenser remained in the event of an emergency.

The lighthouse is a rendered concrete base structure with a steel domed prefabricated lighthouse lantern on top. The walls were found to be of shuttered stone walling with a mortar infill. The sedimentary capstone was used as this is a hard and locally obtained rock. The exterior and interior of the lighthouse were then rendered or plastered.

The Vlaming Head Light featured an illuminant, 85mm vapourised kerosene, dioptric light (63,000 to 200,000 CP). The light flashed in a group of two at 3/10ths of a second every 7.5 seconds. The light was made in Birmingham (UK). When first established the lighthouse was equipped with a small Morse lantern for signalling, but was eventually equipped with a wireless.

In 1942 the US Government built a the nearby Naval Communications Very Low Frequency Center and when in 1969 a light was mounted on its tower 11 the Vlaming Head Lighthouse ceased to function.

Finally, the first known European contact with the site was in 1618 when the Cape was sighted by the Zeewolf and later in that same year when Captain L Jacobs of the Mauritius made the first landing. Two hundred years later the French named the peninsula Cape Murat and in 1818 Captain Philip King successfully rounded the Cape, naming the associated gulf as Exmouth Gulf.

Bonjour Antonio
Nicole

Both pictures are beautiful, but I think I prefer the colors as they are so superb!! Very nice pov. TFS

Olá Antonio,

The sky is spectacular! The blue colour is very beautiful and clouds add that nice effect to make it even more attractive. Excellent composition. The lighthouse is a strong focal point and the contrast of olours very appealing. Nice work!

Roberto

Hello Antonio, great architecture photo with great colors and composition! Good job!

TFS and regards!

Hi Antonio,
Thats a lovely shot especially with those wispy clouds against the deep blue which for me make the image. Nice off centre composition and wide view.
Regards
Wanda

Hello Antonio,
Prefer the main post for the colors & lights. Nice composition of the lighthouse against a backdrop of blue sky & white wispy clouds. Bright & cheerful photo with little sign of overexposure. And thanks for the interesting history of the Vlaming Head Lighthouse. Regards. latiff.

Hello Antonio,
great shot with incredible deep blue sky and beautiful clouds

Hey, great image. Amazing sky which really sells it. I like the black and white too, but colour is my preference, so i'll say this one.
Nice work!
Dave

Hi Antonio
I really like the way you framed this amazing sky decorated with nice cirrus. Insulated place.
Cheers

Hi Antonio,
The story of the Vlaming Head Lighthouse is narrated as good as the snap! The colour is so vibrant to describe the mood of the sky!
A wonderful composition.

The composition is just perfect and the lighthouse idealy placed. I like as well the importance you have given to this wonderful sky, and the proportions that you adopted. Beautiful management of contrasts and colors as well, this is really a great work.

Olá Antonio,

This is for my very easily, I prefer your wonderful colour image.
This are Australian clouds to the sky, here in Belgium we seen almost never this type of clouds.
I find your composition with the lighthouse as real eye catcher very nice.
High quality and lovely sharpness.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Antonio,
Although the b%w is very beautiful, here in the colour version we look at a Fuji Velvia sky, who can stand that... what a sky, what great cloud formations and below a lighthouse which is excellent placed in the frame.
A great shot....i love that sky..!!!

Intresting shot, Antonio. Being a 'Vlaming' myself, I am surprised I'd never heard of the place.

EXTRA SEMANTICS: 'Vlaming' is Dutch (or Flemish) for 'Fleming', i.e. someone from Flanders. The historical region of Flanders compromised parts of the North of France, the west of Belgium and Zeeland in the south of the Netherlands. The area was broken up through war in the 16th century, so the ones who gave their name to the place probably came from Zeeland. Now the term 'Vlaming' is mostly used to refer to a Dutch speaking Belgian, such as yours truly,

Benny

Very cool Antonio, I'm a sucker for a lighthouse, and you've done this one very well, it's positioned perfectly in the frame, on that hill, you have excellent colour in the lighthouse, as well as the fields leading up to it and that amazing sky, and the detail is tack sharp. Very very nice. With respect to the workshop, I generally prefer colour, but I do like that black and white. I'm going to waffle on this one...

Thanks, John

Hello Antonio,

The workshop in B&W is special but I think that the vivid blue sky in the original is superb, so eye-catching and absorbing. You show also here how arid the surrounding landscape is. My father returned from WA last month and talks about it a lot. It seems to be a remarkable place fully capable of making us East coasters a bit envious. You have done well here to capture such interesting cloud formations; such would stand as a indication of strong winds I would guess. The rich saturation is set at a perfect level, not overdone or underdeveloped. The frame sits well here.

Matt

WOW! The last critique that you wrote you mentioned that it isn't fair that you only can enjoy the shot and not the place. Well, this post of yours is the revenge! I would love to be there too. Everything is just perfect. The light, the sky, the colors, the contrast! Amazing! Your composition with the lighthouse off center is well done. The only minor thing is probably a slight tilt to the rigth giving the impression that the lighhouse leans to the side.

Grande foto.

browsing your impressive gallery I found this gem - already from the thumbnail it's obvious that the sky is amazing, and that's something I'm particularly fond of lately. the polarizer works very well to deepen the blue and bring out the beautiful cloud formations, I like it a lot. the curve of the road is a nice way to lead the eye towards the lighthouse, and I like that you have included the part of the stone wall on the far left, I find it creates an interesting "starting point" for the road. excellent work, my compliments.

regards,
Kristine
