Open cut mines aren't places to marvel at nature but they are places to reflect on what was there. This massive hole used to be topped by Whaleback Mountain (in WA's Pilbarra region) which became doomed because of its concentration of iron ore.
Whaleback mine is 1.5km wide, 5 km long and 0.5 km deep making it the world's largest iron ore mine. You have to look closely to make out what are massive trucks and other machinery in the bottom of the pit.
Surprising the red colour isn't the iron - the main iron ore is actually blue.
I've actually toned down the reds because they were almost unbelievably bright and saturated!
The main customer for Australian iron ore used to be Japan but these days it is China.

A great shot showing this great terraced red hole. A sense of the scale is provided somewhat by the trucks, which you indicate are monster trucks in their own right.

Hello Ian - I must show this shot to my husband, he's a geologist and has worked in mining, exploration and development and is always interested in mining environment shots. We only have one really big open-cast mine in Namibia and that's a uranium mine. Nowhere near as large as this one looks to be. This is a very good overview of the mine and its intricacies are well detailed. A great illustration of man's continual need for iron ore. Does most of it get shipped to China? Fascinating. Warm regards Rosemary
