Photographer’s Note

Today I would like to invite you all to admire the spectacular view from the Vlaming Head Lighthouse. Here, we are facing north towards the very tip of the Exmouth Peninsula. On the left hand side we can see the green waters of the northern part of the Ningaloo Marine Park which with its 280km is the world’s biggest fringe coral reef. The Ningaloo Reef is also the only reef in the world on the west side of a continent.

The Ningaloo Reef is famous for its whale sharks which feed there during March and April. During the winter months, the reef is part of the migratory routes for dolphins, dugongs, manta rays and various species of whales including the humpback whale. The beaches of the reef are an important breeding ground of the loggerhead, green and hawksbill turtles. They also depend on the reef for nesting and food. The Ningaloo supports an abundance of fish (500 species), corals (300 species), molluscs (600 species) and many other marine invertebrate.

The group of 13 antennas seen in the frame is the Very Low Frequency Communications Station Harold E. Holt, built by the US Navy in 1963 and named after the a former Australian Prime Minister.

VLF is important communication system because the frequencies penetrate deep into the earth and deep into the sea (especially in the lower portion of the VLF spectrum) and therefore can be received by submerged submarines.

Finally, the little green patch by the side of the road on bottom right is a tourist caravan park which is very popular all year round.

In WS1 I am posting a closer view of the VLF Station.
