Nitmiluk National Park which is in the Northern Territory of Australia, 244 km southeast of Darwin, has been established around a series of gorges on the Katherine River and Edith Falls.
These gorges and the surrounding landscape have great ceremonial significance to the local Jawoyn people, who are custodians of Nitmiluk National Park.
In Jawoyn, Nitmiluk means place of the cicada dreaming.
The gorges can be explored by canoe and flat bottomed boat. In the dry season the gorges become separated as the level of the river falls. They are interconnected in the wet.
There is a visitor centre located at the Katherine Gorge, about 30 km east of the town of Katherine. Information displays are set up that explain the geology, landscape and aboriginal history of the National Park. Tours can be booked at the centre or at the visitor centre in the town.
The town of Katherine has a history of flooding with documented accounts in 1957, 1974 and the 1998 Australia Day flood. The 1998 flood devastated the town and the area was declared a National Disaster. The flood was as a result of the 300-400 mm of rainwater brought by Cyclone Les that brought the already full Katherine River up an additional 21.3 metres. The floodwaters inundated the town and much of the surrounding region requiring the evacuation of many residents.
There are more than 500 ancient rock painting sites, some going back tens of thousands of years. These often become flooded during "the wet" as the river can rise 18 m in the narrow passage. In 1998 In a particularly wet season, the paintings higher up can become flooded, damaging these ancient treasures.
Katherine suffered another serious flood in April 2006 with the floodwaters peaking at 19 metres. Damage, however was not extensive and the town quickly recovered.
During the “wet” in March 2007 widespread rain and abnormally high tides wreaked havoc across the Northern Territory , closing roads, cutting off some communities and forcing evacuations. During the boat cruise along the gorge, we were shown the tremendous changes created by such volumes of water. The photo gives us some idea of how powerful these waters can be in order to carve the rocky sides and to cast tonnes of rocks along the banks.
As I said already for my previous photo of Darwin, the weather was overcast and the colours muted. Not the postcard Northern Territory I hoped to experience and share with you.I did sharpen the image, fiddled a little with selective colour options to capture some of the striking colours and I used highlight and brightness options to negate the glare and loss of definition.

Hallo Klaudio!
Here you show us a really near to nature landscape! The colours of the rocks are gorgeous and I like your point of view here. It emphasizes the magnificence very well. I hope this gem of nature isn't commercialized too much. Great note!
Greetings from the winter! ;-)

Hi Klaudio,

Yes, I love your title here... Striking Land..
In a glance, it's a visual treat....
You have captured that sensibly.
The waters are looking cool.... and the rock forms very interesting in frame.
All the best, dear friend.

The landscape does have a very dry appearance despite the presence of clouds, not an ideal light, but pretty view, and a rarely seen location, under these conditions this is as good as it can get.

This is a beautiful Australian landscape. The NortherN Territory is a fantastica place. I am planning a trip by car from Brisbane to Darwin and down to Alice Springs. Is this park accessible by normal sealed road?
Your picture is excellent with a great POV and beautiful colours.
Antonio

Hi Klaudio
A nice low POV or so it seems. The rocks in the FG provide a nice contrast to those in the BG. I think the overcast sky has allowed you to capture better colour and detail in the landscape. Good write up.

Well done,

Hello Klaudio,

I always find tricky to shoot on cloudy days, tell you the truth I avoide them as much as I can. I see you have done it brilliantly here.

Thanks for sharing
