Photographer’s Note

This is the Fort Hill Wharf within Darwin Harbour. This photo of a navy patrol boat and 3 tug boats is taken from Stokes Hill Wharf within Darwin Wharf Precinct. Due to its proximity to Asia the Port of Darwin is an important gateway to countries to the north such as Indonesia and East Timor.

On 19 February 1942 this area was destroyed by two bombing raids which killed at least 243 people.
