The name Gerringong is an Aboriginal word meaning "fearful place". Some say it was the name our First Australians gave to it upon seeing Captain Cook's ship sail up the coast. Today, it's not so fearful, and still very beautiful and untouched. Gerringong is about 2 hours drive south of Sydney and apart from having some beautiful coast, was also famous for its dairy farming. This land holds special significance to me as it's where my maternal grandfather's family settled and began dairy farming upon migrating from Northern Ireland.

aren't these untouched areas of the world the best! and they often are always so Ironic because why would someplace thats so beautiful be untouched! lol
think about it!
thats how i felt about Iceland - the entire country except for Reykjavic. once you get out of the city almost every location seems to be untouched.
Easter Island is similar.
strange too, that this is only 2hours from hustling blustling Sydney.
this one really does look like a mirror image, the water in the fg is totally still, like a sheet of glass.
gotta love those colors in the stone too.
You must be in heaven here!!
about your comment to my WEB shot. You mentioned how the abstract photo was out of my norm, (as did a few others.
I find that strange lol
because I'm always taking abstract architectural photos, but i guess i'm not posting them on TE as nearly as much as i used to.
I'm actually really trying to stay in the TE motif of learning about the world.
Basically posting more of those types of photos and less of the Juanesque style that i used to post.
anyways..nice to see you back!

beautiful place, certainly worth few hours drive out of Sydney.
I like the way you framed the scene-reflections as well as the rock formation so beautifully illuminated by the Sun make here very strong and eye-catching focal point. But there are also some smaller details making your photo so exceptional, like for example the waves breaking on the shore in the distance(it looks fabulous!)
PS.once again Thank You for your comment on my photo and especially WS.

What an image?!!! Beautiful!
Excellent POV, true colors and timing.
Subhogen (4067) 2014-03-21 2:08
This is an excellent shot of the rocky shore in nice warm light. The still water has allowed perfect mirror reflections. Good for you to trace back to your roots and capture a fine picture from that place. I love the details you have captured on the rock face. Excellent clarity as well. Thanks for sharing.

This is a terrific photo, excellent light, superb details, well balanced colors and outstanding reflections. You are lucky to get such perfect calm water condition, it looks like a mirror.
Very well done
Wish you a nice weekend.

love places like this. No intervention from man just nature's work at its finest. I love the sense of calm and yet drama in this fine image. Glorious textures here and of course the double whammy effect to multiply the pleasure and impact. Stunning!
Have a good weekend - B.
Kamilutka (8105) 2014-03-21 3:38
stunning picture - my congratulations! The composition uses the reflection on the water in very good way in order to intense the impression. Great choice of POV and masterly managed light which resulted in rich and warm colors.
Thanks for sharing

Ciao cara Lisa,
A wonderfully interesting note about this place and how nice that you have a family relationship to this place! Now, let me see: could it possibly be that the father or father-in-law of your maternal grandfather (who emigrated from Northern Ireland) was the stonemason who built the bridge at Strontian in Lochaber? Or was the stonemason on your grandmother's side? Or was the stonemason actually your great great grandfather? Just crossed my mind - if we (or I) could get a photo of that bridge, we could write an article for the Scots Magazine! :o)
Anyway, back to the Antipodes. This is a stunningly beautiful photograph of a place which, I suppose, could, in less calm weather, be indeed quite "fearful". But on this calm morning or evening it looks so wonderfully peaceful and calm.
The light is sublime, lighting the rocks and crags on the right beautifully and the calm water providing gorgeous reflections. And a lovely clear sky above with just a little wisp of cloud on the left.
Glorious light and colours, perfect composition and exposure and exquisite details and sharpness best seen, of course, at its full size of 1200 pixels wide.
ktanska (26369) 2014-03-21 4:13
I'm glad you've had time for some beachcombing. Warm light is excellent and those rocks quite impressive. I guess there is some reef or sandbank further as the sea water is never that still.
arnie (1805) 2014-03-21 4:20
What a fantastic shot, great detail of the rock formation and a beautiful reflection. TFS
danos (92682) 2014-03-21 4:44
very nice the view of this reddish sharp rock with the created reflection on the calmly surface of the sea to makes the image even more effective.
The light and the colour management are captured superb as enhanced from the clarity of the scene.

Long time no see.
I like the light and the reflection in the calm water. A very nice spot for photography. The framing is perfect.
Have a nice day

A lovely image full of mood and atmosphere when the warm light bathed the shore line and rugged cliff. Great composition and colours but the eye is centred to the perfect mirror reflections. Fine capture, tfs
photoray (13725) 2014-03-21 7:44
Attractive coast scene for the color saturated and textured giant cliff mirrored perfectly in the tide pool, then a glimpse on the horizon of a crashing wave.
PS: Will you see our Dodgers playing in Sydney?
ikeharel (65281) 2014-03-21 7:49
The fabulous golden light gave an outstanding chance for a magnificent sight, especially with the rerflection of the cliff over the water.
An exquisite POV and photojob done, sharp detils shown and nature in it's grandeur on your gallery.
Cheers, have a great weekend.

Ciao e buon fine settimana

I look at this crystal clear water and reflection, and then see the crashing waves on the left and wonder how in he name of Mary Joseph and the the donkey did you manage this? I can only surmise that you have powers similar to the character Storm in X Men and that you can control regional weather, and I must admit I am jealous.
This is a stunning place, and I love your note about the history of this place and it's name. Te personal connection is the coolest. I wonder how it must feel for your forefathers to see the new place they will start in the their new lives and be told, oh yes this is called fearful place. It's certainly a far cry from Bougainvillae Boulevard, or castle gardens or whatever modern names we give places. I actually like these darker names, and given my way I would name every housing estate in Ireland. First we have Hellish crescent, then destruction walk and after that have nuclear annihilation place.
Haha, sorry, I am rambling. Been travelling with work lately, so kind of on walkabout too. Had an 18 hour day today with seven of those driving so the two wheat juices I just had have made me a bit dizzy. Cool picture, and cool story.
Best wishes from Nenagh in Co Tipperary. The rumours are true too, it is a bloody long way. They have a castle though, and I have my camera! haven't found the vegan lesbian commune yet though but I will keep searching and report my findings through the art of photography :)
Have a great weekend.
williewhistler (15839) 2014-03-21 13:34
oh I am intrigued, just what shutter speed did you use to get this lovely mirror like effect on the sea?
Together with that gorgeous glowing light and the cliff reflections it adds up to a most attractive coastal scene.
Kindest wishes Les.

una foto meravigliosa, la luce è bellissima e il riflesso ne aumenta l'efficacia.
Nella nota ci sono molte cose interessanti, ma di sicuro, il riferimento alla tua famiglia è quello che più colpisce.

Hello Lisa - A subject that enchants and pleases me. The rocky shoreline is beautiful under golden light and the mirror-like pool has blessed you with the opportunity to exploit the stunning reflections. A shot to be savoured slowly like a fine wine allowing all the details to slowly be revealed.
Hope you're having a super weekend!

one more post which relates to Captain Cook :)
Beautiful 100% reflection makes a spectacular foreground. Amazing colors of the unspoiled nature. I like the rock in the right which breaks the reflection. Real master piece,

Gidday my dear ADB,
It's so bizarre as I write this, I'm watching a live baseball game from your neck of the woods with my local "Boys of Summer"(Az. Diamondbacks) kicking off the MLB season in Sydney at the SCG...and here it is late night while they play late afternoon. Crazy time differences!!
Anyway, on to your photo. I'm such a turd, I had no idea you had posted a few new pictures since the last one I commented on!? I know you've had much more pressing business, but I swung and missed big on keeping up here. Fail! :)
What a beauty this is, and what tremendous golden light you've captured, setting a tone befitting the significance of this place for you. Rich, rustic colors and vivid textures work in sublime harmony with the virtual glass reflection. An all 'round beauty. Enjoy the rest of your afternoon/evening. Take care.
Cheers from the top side,
By the way, I plan on using your "Abstractosis" for a title on an upcoming picture, it's a perfect match with my current theme. :)

Cia Cara Lisa,
Splendida questa roccia che si riflette nell'acqua. Bellissimo il contrasto blu e dorato e meravigliosa la luce. Mi piace molto!
Un caro saluto e buon recupero per la tua mamma.

Ciao Cara Lisa,
We all love to know about our own personal history and this must be a very special place for you and your family. I would be proud to call this place home, it is utterly beautiful! The rich colours of the cliffs, incredibly detailed, are supplied twice, doubling the impact I have really enjoyed just gazing at this, so quiet, so still, so natural!
Have a lovely day,
emka (89499) 2014-03-24 22:24
Ciao cara Lisa,
This time something quite new and unknown in your gallery.
It looks wild and untouched, and how you got to the sea from this high cliff? It is so quiet, ideal mirror for red cliff. And what it this
white on the horizon? Cloud, wave?
Stunning photo, I love it.

Love the warm cold color contrasts between the red cliffs and blue skylight reflections in the mirror like tidal pool, which has given nice symmetrical reflections and imparted a tranquil mood. The breaking surf at left add contrast. Tfs!

Hello dear Lisa,
this place isn't fearful but it's awesome. I like very much the perspective and the symmetry of your presentation, the contrast and the harmonious coexistence of the distinctive colours and textures. The mirror-like effect is excellently rendered and mesmerizing. The light exalts the contrasts and offers beautiful colours. I also like the breaking wave that adds action. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Kielia (24077) 2014-04-10 8:51
a fabulous, wild and fascinating seascape taken under such attractive light. The warmth of the colors and the contrasts appeal to me very much. What I like best of this one is the excellent perspective.
annjackman (21402) 2014-04-10 11:04
Wow - this is lovely. The reflection in the still water and the glorious light give great impact. With your usual very careful production this really hits the spot! How lovely to have such a place within driving distance.
Best wishes, Ann
