Photographer’s Note
The Griffiths Island Lighthouse at Port Fairy is 11 m high and was built in 1859 from bluestone by John Griffiths, employing Scottish stonemasons.
This area was initially inhabited by the Knarn Kolak Aboriginal people.
Port Fairy is a coastal town in western Victoria, Australia. It is located on the Princes Highway in the Shire of Moyne 28 kilometres (17 mi) west of Warrnambool and 290 km west of Melbourne, where the Moyne River enters the Southern Ocean.
In the early 19th century the area was used by whalers and seal hunters. By 1835 a whaling station had been established on what is now Griffiths Island. Bluestone cottages built by whalers and sealers of the time are still standing around the town. A general store was opened in 1839. In 1843, James Atkinson, a Sydney solicitor, purchased land in the town. He drained the swamps, subdivided and leased the land, and built a harbour on the Moyne River. He renamed the town 'Belfast' after his hometown in Northern Ireland. The Post Office opened on July 1, 1843 as Port Fairy but was renamed Belfast on January 1, 1854 before reverting to the original name July 20, 1887.
Agriculture developed in the region, and Belfast became an important transport hub. By 1857 the town had a population of 2,190. In the mid-to-late 19th century, Belfast was one of Australia's largest ports, catering to the whaling industry. In 1887 the town went back to the original name Port Fairy, as a result of an Act of Parliament.
At the 2001 census, Port Fairy had a population of 2,523. Its primary industries are tourism and fishing, and it is the home port for one of Victoria's largest fishing fleets.
I had previously seen & commented on a photo taken by Andrew (macondo) of this Lighthouse, I knew that if ever I was out that way I would make the effort to visit, & hopefully come away with some nice shots. This is one of them.

Santo, nice to see you again, it's been a while.
This image looks like you've been pushing the post boundaries just a little. The orange colour tones makes for a spectacular image.
Good POV too, the lighthouse properly dominates the frame.
Great looking sky.

Hi Santo, This is a very different image from your, more usual, tatooed girls. The light is unusual, what time of day was it - I guess late afternoon, astonishingly red sky, which works well, in a surreal sort of way. What PP did you do on it? (as Peter said - good to see something from you after a quiet spell). cheers, Steve

Is this only the result of a UV filter? The strong colour is very nice but it seems a bit unrealistic. Anyway, it is a nice light house which appears taller than reality. I have been briefly to Port Fairy when I was working near Timboon. Well done.

Hello Santo,
the scene looks like a BIG fire - incredible colour of the sky! a bit dramatic (but maybe because it's a warm red-orange gamma)... The lighthouse looks rather "heavy" and immobile from this pow POV. Very emotional shot :)
Very best wishes from Moscow,
Elena

Hi Santo!
The warm colours, the strong contrasts and the dramatic sky contribute to make the atmosphere special and particular. The perfect point of view is excellent. The note is very informative and interesting. Cheers!
Best regards
Denis!

Hello Santo,
This is a fine composition, with a few elements nicely related to each others!
The lighthouse stands prominently in the frame, and the colours give e feeling of drama...
Probably not the largest of lighthouses but it looks like huge from this point of view!
Greetings,
Pablo -

Ciao Santo.
Ciao.
Bobo.

Hi Santo,
It almost surprise me at first wondering how the hell you manage to get to Port Fairy so soon after the recent event. Then the date solved the puzzle. I cant tell if this is the result of any PP work as Steve suggested. The view is certainly very dramatic with the red sunset sky dominating the frame, the details and exposure on the lighthouse is good and I can even see the mortar joints. Looking at this makes me regret for not pushing another 28km from Warrnambool in April.

Hi Santo.
Hello again from Paris, where it's hot and muggy.
Great shot of the lighthouse and the sky, quite different from mine. The tremendous sky and your angle of view makes the lighthouse look a lot more isolated and perhaps bigger than it seems in my photo. Amazing colour which makes the sky look very fiery. The lighthouse is well placed in the frame, and I like the contrast of the dark and the white in the right side corners. I might go back to PF during the late winter months and have a look around, the weather was bright, sunny and still when I went in Feb.
Anyway, great shot.
Regards,
Andrew

hello Santo,
I've always had a feeling of "the edge of the world" when I look at the lighthouses, and here the surreal colours add to the dream-like mood. simple composition works quite well, anything more complicated would distract from the colours and mood. interesting shot, I like it.
best,
Kristine

Ciao Santo, this looks like something out of a sci-fi or horror movie. The colours are amazing, the positioning of the lighthouse within the frame is great as is the light. Great job, Lisa.
