Photographer’s Note
This is a shot from a similar position to the one I took for the Split Point Lighthouse. What a difference a focal length makes eh? With this one taken from just west of Anglesea you can see the foreshore with the beach and cliffs around the bend along the Ocean Road to the Split Point at Aireys Inlet with Eagle Rock at the apex of this point. Most of the foreshore here is Crown land so it is open to the public.
There was some controversy with this stretch with the building of Ocean Road. The start of the build was in 1919. In the early 20’s there was a feud between the Winchelsea Shire Council and a private citizen, Mr. C. J. Lane, who happened to own almost all of the land along the coast in this section. Without this access the road had to follow a very difficult bush track which was next to impassable in wet weather. In December, 1924 Lane (at his own expense) finally opened up to 10 miles of the road, then slapped a toll on it near Aireys Inlet. By the end of the decade, the Great Ocean Road Trust had acquired Lane’s Road.
The building of the Great Ocean Road was started in 1919. Over the duration of the construction nearly 3,000 returned soldiers worked on it. Under the Road Trust’s ownership it finally opened on November 26, 1932. With all of the loose ends tied up (including this one between Anglesea and Aireys Inlet) the Great Ocean Road Trust finally handed over the road as a gift to the State Government, on Friday October 2, 1936.
Much of this from: http://www.greatoceanrd.org.au/history/progress/index.asp
Workflow was as follow:
Shot in Raw - NEF files adjusted for highlights and shadow
Rotated to level and cropped
Adjusted levels
Adjusted curves - overall
Adjusted curves with a selection on sky only
Dodged and burned with overlay layer (5% opacity brush) – lightened foreshore and darkened sky (slight)
Added a layer for sharpening and “over-sharpened” with Smart Sharpen
Modified sharpening with a layer mask (10% opacity black brush)
Saved as a tiff
For this post, further sharpened for the reduced size, framed, and saved as a jpeg

Hi John,
Beautiful low sky contrasts wonderfully with the blue sea. I love how you choose to show the whole inlet with its lovely scrub trees and tiny beach.

Hi John. You have some excellent landscapes from this trip south. I like this as it shows the surf which the area around there is famous for. As an ex surfie these scenes bring back fond memories. Excellent notes as we always see from you too. TFS. Murray.
