Barwon Heads, about 100 km from Melbourne, is a small holiday resort town of about 3000 people, located at the mouth of the Barwon River, where it flows into Bass Strait after passing through Geelong. The recent trip around the Bellarine Peninsula, undertaken by TE members Santo, Klaudio, Steve and I, finished on the beach near The Bluff lookout. After crossing the wide estuary of the Barwon River as dusk approached, we quickly found the road to the lookout, where we hoped to see a fine sunset. In the end, we were not disappointed as we descended from the lookout to the beach. This photo was taken at at 8pm, as the sun appeared below the cloud cover, about half an hour before it disappeared completely.
Some years ago, the Australian government TV station, the ABC (like the BBC) produced a pleasant Sunday-evening series called 'Sea Change' (sort of a sophisticated soapie), which was filmed partly in Barwon Heads and partly in another Bellarine Peninsula town called St. Leonards. It was very successful at the time, and I think it might have helped to feed the property boom (should that be 'bubble'?) in coastal towns, as many people, herd-like, began to strive for a view of the sea from their lounge window. On this topic, I once inspected a small apartment in Melbourne which was advertised as having 'sea glimpses'; I found this promise to be true, if one stood on a chair in a corner.
The map link, for those who are interested, shows precisely where I was standing when I took the photo.

Very nice landscape capture with good sidelight and perfect layout.

Greetings from Turkey! I've been to Barwon Heads when I was a kid but not to this back beach. Swam in a river estuary there. Good sharpness and nice reflections in the wet sand. Well composed using the rule of thirds. I like the subtle warm cold color contrast between the blue & orange red in the distance. Tfs!

La lumière est superbe, et crée des teintes chaudes très agréables.
Joli mouvement de l'eau et du sable.

Bonjour, cher ami Andrew,
C'est le genre de composition qui me comble. La beauté simple et naturelle est parfaitement mise en image.
La lumière dispensée sur les flots et sur les falaises donne à l'ensemble un effet de toute beauté.
La réussite est grande.

It's a gorgeous sunset on the beach indeed. The waves reflect the lights greatly.
Kamilutka (3207) 2013-03-04 8:47
this is very attractive sunset! Lovely colors and all these golden reflections which sun cast over the sand are really making this shot eye catching.
Great light management!
Thanks for sharing

Hi Andrew. Great "restoration" job- the colours and light very close to what was there. My photo that I readied for posting is to artificial and reddish, so after seeing your image I think I shall bury it. Great light and colours, clarity and depth. Regards. Klaudio.

Hi Andrew - a good evening photo capturing a good glow on the sand.

You have capitalized the beautiful light very well in composing this beach view. Love the breaking wave and light falling on the sandy shore.

Great light and clarity in this shot. Classic in composition in many ways. I like the little highlights on the wave in the foreground that pick up the sun's dying light.

Very nice sunset image. Love the glowing area on the top and the seemingly dark at the bottom. Shows enough contrast, calm and refreshing scene. Well handled and captured!

Hi Andrew. It is a pleasure to look at this wonderful landscape. Composition, light and colors are perfect. Informative text. The photo has a lot of inner peace.
SteveH (6155) 2013-03-05 15:03
Hi Andrew, a very different take on this than mine. Whereas I focused on the foreground, you have provided an image showing more of the general scene, which works well, the haze in the distance, waves breaking, posts in the sand dunes and the cloudy sky. very nice. Cheers, Steve

another fine photo for your gallery.
great info in the written note below, too bad I wasn't there for that TE meeting :)
its all about the lighting isn't it, here we can see some perfect spot lighting on the sands in the far bg areas.
and I really enjoy the layering type of effect from left to right across the frame.
well done my friend

Nice mood through this post.
I guess it is mainly coming from the warm lightning, almost horizontal giving touch of gold color inside a overall blue-grey environment.
As well, a balanced composition with the different stripes from water to shore dunes.

una luce fantastica si diffonde su tutto il panorama.
Bellissima profondità e splendidi colori.

Sensational beauty of this composition with this special light and color tonalities really ideal, great perspective pride with this beach that we lost in the distance, I'm surprised to see it completely empty of people, it is a great place to walk.
A colorful ideal, with good sharpness and optimum brightness, makes the composition more charming.
Very well done. I love it.
Have a nice day.

A pretty and peaceful beachscape beautifully framed and equally attractive coloring along with brilliant warm side lighting. Touch of deep grey has added so much contrast and overall beauty along with effect of the water. This is exquisite that sums up the impact achieved leaving so much to admire. Remarkable, Well done, TFS.

Sweet harmony between the warm tones given by the sunshine and the cool colors of water and gray sky.

Wonderful light on this empty beach and splendid effcets on th waves in the foreground.
holmertz (26932) 2013-03-08 11:33
This looks windswept and desolate and not quite my idea of a cosy beach to spend a day at. But I really like the colours you have captured, the superb light and the very good contrasts. Whatever PP you may have done on this you did it very well.
Jardim (3243) 2013-03-08 12:39
A like of the smooth colours, a balanced composition with good depth.
Royaldevon (17791) 2013-03-09 0:17
You can understand why anyone would love to have this view from their living room window. It is perfectly relaxing and would be even better with the gentle sound of the incoming waves.
Did you get your feet wet, as you have used the line of the tide to great advantage; it draws the eyes in, towards dunes and that primrose sky. The light is so well recorded helping to give this scene a romantic atmosphere.
Have a great w/e,
berek (31921) 2013-03-10 8:51
The light is beautiful, warm colors and creates very pleasant.
Pretty movement of water and sand.
jhm (122444) 2013-03-11 5:22
A totally leave beach but a beach with a lot small stones between the sand.
You chose an excellent angle exactly along the last waves.
Perspective and depth are perfect presently.
What a lovely image with different colors and fantastic light management.
Excellent captured, nice composed, TFS.
Have a nice week,

Hello Andrew ,
A terrific mood , for this splendid coastal view . Under this great lightin he contrast of the white and pink parts with the darker ones is really attractive . The picture is perfectly composed , too .
batalay (32860) 2013-03-18 19:10
The light is fabulous in this early evening shot. With the beach entirely deserted, there is a surrealistic effect, the sort of atmosphere Salvador Dali would have liked to capture. I had read about your group photo-shoot. Clearly you've catalyzed each others best work..
npecanhuk (53901) 2013-03-26 19:07
I really like this one here too!
Special regards to the management of light, colors, chosen pov and composition!
TFS - congrats,
