Trip to Tasmania – Day 4

Devonport to Hobart – 290km along the West Tamar\ and Heritage Highways and a couple minor roads.

Next stop was at Cataract Gorge, just 15 minutes from the city center of Launceston, on the South Esk River. Cataract Gorge is Launceston’s own wilderness where good walking tracks allow for quality leisure time.

The Alexandra Suspension Bridge is probably the most attractive feature of the First Basin in Cataract Gorge. Known locally as the “The Swinging Bridge”, the Alexandra Suspension Bridge is a wonderful example of 19th century engineering. The bridge, named after Queen Alexandra, consort to King Edward VII, opened in 1904 and was washed away by the Great Flood of 1929. It was restored in 1930 and the actual bridge has three spans, being the main span 45.7m long and the side spans 10.7 and 16.8m respectively. Today’s main posting is a view from the Alexandra Lookout and WS1 a view taken while travelling on the Chairlift.

The second main feature of the First Basin is the 457m long Chairlift connecting the two sides of the basin. The importance of this chairlift, built in 1972, is the fact that it has the longest single chairlift span in the world, with 308 meters. In WS2 is a view of the chairlift taken from the top of one of the pylons of the main span.
