Launceston is a city in the north of Tasmania, Australia at the junction of the North Esk and South Esk rivers where they become the Tamar River. Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania after Hobart. With a population (greater urban and statistical sub division) of 106,153, Launceston is the ninth largest non-capital city in Australia.
Settled by Europeans in March 1806, Launceston is one of Australia's oldest cities and is home to many historic buildings. Like many Australian places, it was named after a town in the United Kingdom – in this case, Launceston, Cornwall.
Launceston has also been home to several firsts such as the first use of anaesthetic in the Southern Hemisphere, the first Australian city to have underground sewers and the first Australian city to be lit by hydroelectricity. The city has a temperate climate with four distinct seasons.
The animals in the FG are depictions of the Thylacinus cynocephalus, commonly called thylacine or Tasmanian tiger for its characteristic stripes,it was determined to be extinct as early as 1982.
The thylacine was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times

Hello Les - When I saw the name Launceston I immediately thought of Cornwall and from the TN I thought that the place had changed dramatically since I was last there!
Now I see I was in the wrong hemisphere! I wonder if there is mining close to this town as I know many Cornish miners went to Australia (as well as SA)
An interesting note to accompany your shot and I must say the PO has a very grand look to it. Nicely composed with interesting elements from front to back.
Have a good Easter weekend, I hope the weather is kind to you.

know the Cornish Launceston well and it is so different to this antipodean one. I suppose a tad warmer than the Cornish one in January, but equally as beautiful and impressive. A super fine image and gloriously composed shot. Fascinating!
Have a pleasant weekend - B.

Ciao, buon fine settimana e buona Pasqua

J'aime beaucoup ce cadrage vertical ainsi que le cadrage incluant les chiens en statue sur les roches qui donnent de la profondeur à la composition.La tour ronde est de toute beauté dans ce ciel parfait.

A fine composition with a foreground so distinctly separate from the rest that it is almost like two pictures in one. The sculptures of animals are quite nice and orginal, but my favourite part of the photo is no doubt the magnificent post office with its interesting architecture and fine colours which you captured well with this perfect exposure.
I don't suppose that there are anywhere any monuments to the Tasmanian aboriginals, who were also made extinct in a fairly short time afer the arrival of Europeans?

We don't see too many pictures of Tasmania here, therefore your contribution is interessant from the start.
Somehow for me Tasmania evokes the image of a wild backwater (probably the result of watching to much Bugs Bunny shows with the Tasmanian devil as a kid), but it seems to be a very pleasant place indeed. Lovely light and the wildlife statues are very attractive.
have a great day and happy easter

A lovely streetscape and a wonderful architectural shot with amazing clarity and detail. Good POV showing both sides of the building and its unique and beautiful design. The pink/orange colour is really attractive, and catches the eye right away. The sky provides a nice colour contrast to the post office tower. The composition is well balanced and dynamic with the foreground sculptures and your note is informative and interesting. Nicely displayed.

beautiful town composition. I know Tasmania mainly from Lisa's photos, she presented the spectacular landscapes but I don't remember her showing any of the towns. This is a lovely addition to the TE gallery presenting a picturesque scene. Composition is brilliant with the sculptures in the foreground and such an interesting tower. Sky is beautifully decorated with that touch of linear clouds.
