Time on the Water Photo

Photographer’s Note

The Derwent River plays an importrant role in the lives of most Hobart inhabitants, whether it be simply enjoying its tranquil environment, taking a ferry ride or sailing a yacht.
While I spent some time on the old ferry boat, which took me a little way up the river and under the Tasmin bridge, I also enjoyed the serene scene of these week-end sailors who were taking part in a yacht race. As you can see from my image, there wasn't a great amount of wind at this time and therefore the "race" was rather relaxing and sedate.....but I really believe its not a matter of how quickly they sail or who wins the race, but rather how much time they spend on the water, and how much fun was had while doing so.

Hi, Grant,
Wonderfully captured sails.
They give life to the faded hills behind.
The water is superb in the shot.
One can feel the dynamic of the event.

Beautiful and relaxing. The colours of the sails stand out very nicely against the pale background. The view is excellent and the natural surroundings of the area add to the interest in the image. Nice work Grant.

Hi Grant.
Just did a search of recent shots from Aust. and found this one. Really nice. I like the crop which puts the three layers in fine proportion. The scene is very appealing with those colourful sails, and the rear boat balances the composition nicely. The light is good. My only complaint would be that the image is a little too compressed at only 76k, when it could be up to 200k. The image quality is not bad, but could be a tad better. Otherwise, it's a really good shot.
