Photographer’s Note
Trip to Tasmania – Day 5
Hobart to Bruny Island – 100km along the Huon and Channel Highways and a ferry across D’Entrecasteaux Channel.
Kettering, the town of my last posting, was just the departing point for one of the most spectacular boat tours we have ever done, the south-east coast of Bruny Island.
Bruny Island is named after the French explorer Bruni d’Entrecasteaux who explored the region in 1792. The island was originally inhabited by the Aborigines until European arrival, although there is still a large community of people who identify as Aboriginal. Abel Tasman tried to land in the vicinity of Adventure Bay in November 1642. In 1773 Tobias Furneaux discovered and named Adventure Bay; four years later on 26 January 1777 James Cook's two ships, the Resolution and Discovery stayed in the bay for two days. Cook carved his initials in a tree that was destroyed in a 1905 bushfire and is now commemorated by a plaque. In 1788 and again in 1792 William Bligh anchored in Adventure Bay.
Geologically, Bruny Island is comprised of two islands - North Bruny and South Bruny - that are joined by a long and narrow sandy isthmus. The seaward side of the island features two long beaches - Adventure Bay and Cloudy Bay - it is for the most part extremely rugged, with cliffs of dolerite that tower over 200 metres above sea level.
The tour began at Adventure Bay and after rounding Fluted Cape continued alongside some of the Australia’s highest sea cliffs. We passed through the narrow gap between the coast and The Monument (main posting and WS1), a tall slender stack, travelled beneath towering crags with spectacular sculptured features (WS2), drifted up close to listen to the awesome “breathing rock” and felt the power of the nature at the point where the Tasman Sea meets the might of the Southern Ocean. During the four hours adventure at sea we also saw beautiful marine wild life such as birds (cormorants and albatrosses), schools of Tasmanian salmon, seals and dolphins.

Hello Antonio,
Stunning rock formation, can pass for man made!
Interesting colour palette, with black and different hues of blue...
With a bit of imagination one can make this be just like anything, well seen and recorded!

Antonio,

Hello Antonio,
Just tonight I was at a friends house looking at his photographs of Tasmania, we all came to the same opinion that it is a photographers paradise. This capture is truly exceptional, the silouhetted rock formations make for a dramatic view across the water and against that crystal clear sky. Superb composition and POV.
A very beautiful capture, congratulations.
Warm regards

The silhouette and the name are rather evocative of Monument Rock in the US Southwest. You were wise to present it in a vertical format, accentuating the verticality of the scene. The note is surpassing, informative and well written.
