Photographer's Note

This is the Bay of Fires on the north-east coast of Tasmania. I spent the entire day on this beach, swimming and snorkelling, without seeing a single person. The Tasmanian wilderness is truly one of the world's greatest secrets. The place is wild, untouched and so touchingly beautiful. For the moment. For decades now, environmentalists have fought to save the Tasmanian wilderness, the fight to save the Gordon River from being dammed, being one of the more famous protests which successfully saw the Federal Labor Government win a High Court case against the State Government which stopped the dam being built.

In late 2013, the newly elected federal conservative government have announced their intention to de-classify 400,000 hectares of old growth forest from World Heritage status in order to log it. This is the first time any government in the world has ever attempted to de-classify protected forest for political reasons.
