This is the Bay of Fires on the north-east coast of Tasmania. I spent the entire day on this beach, swimming and snorkelling, without seeing a single person. The Tasmanian wilderness is truly one of the world's greatest secrets. The place is wild, untouched and so touchingly beautiful. For the moment. For decades now, environmentalists have fought to save the Tasmanian wilderness, the fight to save the Gordon River from being dammed, being one of the more famous protests which successfully saw the Federal Labor Government win a High Court case against the State Government which stopped the dam being built.
In late 2013, the newly elected federal conservative government have announced their intention to de-classify 400,000 hectares of old growth forest from World Heritage status in order to log it. This is the first time any government in the world has ever attempted to de-classify protected forest for political reasons.

Superb control over depth of field for this stunning composition. I like the tonal contrasts and the excellent rendering of the textural detail. I wish you a very pleasant weekend.

A fine corner on the edge of our round world, Lisa, a slight geometry-error term - but I like it as a title.
White stunning sand, in contrast to blue and turquoise water, situated between those big rocks shaped by water and wind through millions of years.
Fabulous nature's, well done photojob.
Have a nice weekend,

Hello Lisa ,
A wonderful wild beach ! With the granitic rocks , teh white sand , and the emerald water , it looks like the Seychelles ( just the coco trees are missing ) . MAy be the temparature of the sea is not the same ;)
We can see that you've composed the picture very carefully .

What a beautiful place this is. The really cool thing about this website, we get to see such beautiful places from around the world, but so many are hidden secret places like this, and if not for this photo I would probably never see it! The sea is that rare shade of paradise blue, and the red tones in the rocks look so beautiful against it. You created such a sense of depth by composing the rocks in such a way too. The rocks look really roundy and soft too. I guess they arent soft, but the roundiness of them look that way.
Again, its hard to believe a government can be so bloody stupid to try something like this. When I read your note, I actually thought "you can DE classify something like this??" Boggles the mind, i'm with you in spirit against this kind of mindless shitehawkery.
Have a great weekend, nearly there :)

if I could only make it someday to this Edge:)
The scene looks wonderful!it´s hard to imagine someone could have the idea to de-classify this protected area-it´s like an own goal.
You´ve brought a piece of paradise today to our homes.Truly beautiful place and excellent presentation of it.
Have a nice weekend

What a beautiful light! Good contrast also. Very nice shot.
Romano46 (16578) 2014-05-09 13:56
Buon fine settimana

Ciao Cara Lisa,
Are people protesting about this declassification? Let's hope that the authorities are unsuccessful, as in previous times.
This shot reveals a place of ultimate unspoilt beauty! Just the sand, the sea and the rocks.
I love your viewpoint, which details the rock textures as an introduction and as a contrast to the smooth, white sand. The sea, as the third element, is rich and blue, joining together the rocks and the sand.
Have a great w/e,

Wow! Wonderful place and picture!
Sharpness, exposure, colors, large vertical format, chosen pov and composition are all excellent!
It makes me want to visit there!
TFS - congrats,
Enjoy your week-end,

Ciao cara Lisa,
Definitely it is the end of the world for me, not so much for you. But I am horrified again what Australian government plans. They are insane. Let's hope they do not fulfill their plans.

the landscape and the way you present it looks really like on the end of the world. The colors and shapes of the stones are very unusual and make this picture very interesting and eye catching. I love the color of the white sand and turquoise water - it is like an invitation for a swim no one can refuse.
Good POV and very nice framing with strong foreground and excellent depth.
Thanks for sharing
siudzi (32325) 2014-05-10 1:47
The place looks extremely exotic due to the fantastic shapes and textures of these stones. Like the way you composed the scene with this close-up in the foreground which makes the view so attractive and interesting. Very well done!
Have a lovely weekend!
timecapturer (45143) 2014-05-10 3:39
love this place and this irresistible capture of it. A well thought out composition and execution that makes it so enticing and idyllic. Lets just hope it stays this way, I do envy you spending a day alone in this paradise. I think the whole world is fed up with politicians that have very little idea about what the people want let alone how they feel..............
Enjoy your weekend - B.

the wonderful weather combined with the attractive location convey a feeling of positivity and a carefree mood. A lovely shot reminding us of the best days of summer – and so sad to learn about your government’s plans. A great capture accompanied by evocative notes. Thanks for sharing!

beautiful composition with colors and contrasts beautifully rendered on a picture of a great sharpness.
marabu61 (7351) 2014-05-10 13:32
Now if this is the edge of the world, I would gladly fall of the edge here, it is so strikingly beautiful. The beach, the boulders, the sea and the sky all bathed in a wonderful light and with gorgeous colors are simply stunning.
A shame though for the de classify attempts of the gouvernement. It is simply unbelievable how short sighted some of these profit orientated gouvernements are.
have a great sunday

Gidday dear ADB,
Wow...unspoiled, pristine and immaculate are the words that come to mind straight away, sign me up! I tell ya', this would be a huge win-win for me doing just the same...spending all day alone, without the fear of anyone else being subjected to my shirtless physique. :)
This would be well worth traveling times to take advantage of such natural beauty. Not only would I get to swim, relax, and play around all day...but I would be in photo heaven. Stunning scenery, what a shame to think of what's going on in the region that would jeopardize the land. Political gains, sheesh! :(
Hate to end on a bad note, so I'll simply say "Bravo!" Take it easy mate.
Cheers from up top,
The other ADB ;)

A rugged beach well shot, only four strong elements here; rocks, water, sand and polarised sky. You have made an impressive artwork here and very pleasing!
The red lichen covered rock in the fg gives the extra oomph to settle the eye. Tx to your interesting description, Well done shot, TFS
ricardomattos (4268) 2014-05-11 10:31
Beautiful corner you found in this bay. Lovely colors and textures. Very good POV you choose to sharing all this beauty of place.
photoray (10125) 2014-05-11 14:09
I envy you even more now. This unspoiled beach with giant boulders to rest upon, then the clear gorgeous water. And no commercialism in sight.
PS: We also have ongoing battles with our politicans receiving monies, sometime laundered, sometimes campaign contributions. to declassify, reduce in size, open up for lumbering, etc., our protected forests.
danos (83051) 2014-05-11 22:46
brilliant the light of the image with the white sandy beach to dominating the scene, with the reddish colours on the left rock as the others on the far end, make the image even more effective.
I like the beautiful place as a visit in it must be a great experience for everyone.

Lisa, this is a really stunning shot, with clarity front-to-back (great DOF!). Interesting framing, with the diagonal rock line on the left. And the white sand beach against the orange lichens and rocks is really beautiful. Looks like an amazing place. Thanks.

Hi dear Lisa
Belle soirée a toi

The title of the photo is very imressive and the beach is fantastic. l like the colours and composition.
rigoletto (34197) 2014-05-13 14:08
that is where i would like to be now: swimming, snorkelling, sunbathing, walking, photographing, or even standing like a rock doing nothing. what a wonderful place it is. the de-classification issue in your note devastates my cheerful aura, though...
ps: ..."As a criminal lawyer, I often work pro bono for conservation groups whose protesters have been charged with breaching the peace, offensive behaviour and having locked-on to the logging machines."
dear oldie, you know what, now i feel so proud of you, even though i don't know you. can we clone some thousands of copies of you and classify them as some new heritage beings and protest again any de-classification acts thereof?

Wish you a good time

What a gorgeous beach. The colors are so rich; I especially like the splash of color that you placed in the foreground. It really does look pristine, with clean sand and sparkling water. It's different from the urban beaches in my area. You'd never find an empty spot around here. I like the placement of rocks in the frame. Very nice! :-)
mkamionka (29199) 2014-05-16 15:14
I am sorry to hear that people want to destroy places like this. This is just terrible!
Wonderful composition with so many levels. It starts with this rough rock in the foreground which has a touch of characteristic orange color. The beach is beautiful. Colors natural and so eye catching. I love the rocks. This is a great combination of the fine clean sand and the rough huge rocks.
ourania (26316) 2014-05-31 8:30
Hello dear Lisa,
I appreciate very much how deep and clear this view is, how you have brought out the textures and extraordinary colours from the immediate foreground to the distant rocks. There's such a strong sense of wilderness and purity, mesmerizing clarity and warmth. This picture of an isolated place speaks very loud about the cause you are referring to in your note. One has to be completely out of their senses to wish such a marvellous place destroyed. Congratulations and thank you also for your fights!
All the best, have a great day,
Curious_Eye (962) 2014-05-31 15:12
Ach, the Bay of Fires, what a marvellous place that is! This is a beautifully composed shot, I like how the sand, the ocean, and the sky is interlaced here with the rocks. Stunning colours and details. Thank you for bringing back memories of my time in Tassie.
All the best,
