Photographer’s Note

This small rocky island would be recognized by all who have visited the sunshine coast as Old Woman’s Island. It sits just over 1000metres from Mudjimba beach, north of the Maroochy River. It is famous for its left hand surfing swell, which some surfers swim to across from the beach, which takes about ½ an hour in good conditions. Several species of man eating sharks live in these waters, and in my opinion, this is very risky business. I travel out here with my father in our boat from Maroochydore a few times each year to go reef fishing. It is a wonderful spot for snorkeling, but hard to set foot on as the waves and jagged rock shelf prevents a good boat landing. The Island is about 200 metres long at most, and is surrounded by beautiful beds of coral.
