Photographer's Note

This is a view of the Overseas Passenger Terminal, the main terminal for Cruise Ships in Sydney Harbour. From an orientation point of view, as I took this shot, the Sydney Harbour Bridge is to my right, and the Sydney Opera House was directly behind me. This takes us full circle on our tour of Circular Quay . I started this tour with a shot taken from the Observation Tower you see under the flag on the right, looking towards the CBD on the left.

There are not a lot of people here on this day; you can see a few under the umbrellas on the right and there are a couple strolling past Doyle’s Restaurant; there are just enough to give you a sense of the size of this place. When a ship is in of course it is a lot busier here, though you wouldn’t be able to see the Terminal now. The good news is there are always ships coming and going, keeping things interesting down here. The really good news (for people in the area) is the Queen Elizabeth 2 is coming back to town, and this time her sister the Queen Victoria will be here too. They’ll be here overlapping between the 23rd-25th of February (a weekend) so it will be an extra busy time when they come to town. The last time the Queen Elizabeth 2 was in town, it wasn’t a weekend, and you couldn’t move down here. This will be the last trip to Australia for the Queen Elizabeth 2. The ship has been sold
and will end up as a floating hotel in Dubai.

Workflow was as follows:
Shot was taken in Raw, with a jpeg for reference (22 mm @f/8, 1/1500)
NEF file adjusted for exposure, shadow and vignetting
Cropped with perspective to minimize distortion
Didn’t use levels – I was happy with the distribution
Adjusted curves –for contrast
Added an overlay layer and dodged and burned with 5-10% opacity black and white brush
Added saturation layer +15 to master
Saved as a tiff
Resized, reduced noise on blue sky selection, added a layer, inversed selection, sharpened with USM, modified sharpening with a layer mask (30-80% opacity black brush), framed and saved as a jpeg
