May is a fantastic time to be in Sydney. Every year, Vivid Sydney lights up our Harbour, skyscrapers and surrounding waterways. The star of the show is always our Opera House, the creation of Danish architect Jørn Utzon (1918-2008). It's easy to take this building for granted when you see it everyday, but on nights like this one, one can really appreciate just how magnificent it is. Frank Gehry described his masterpiece thus, "Utzon made a building well ahead of its time, far ahead of available technology, and he persevered through extraordinarily malicious publicity and negative criticism to build a building that changed the image of an entire country".
My Workshop shows a very famous photograph of Jorn Utzon taken by Josef Lebovic, an Australian photographer whom I have met a few times and whose work I admire.

Hello Lisa What can I say?
This is a beautiful image of the iconic Opera House.Completely different taken at certain times of the day and different seasons.
I am still treasuring my images that I took of the Opera House when you so kindly took us around the `best spots`on our last holiday. We must not forget our gorgeous cabbie - he was such a darling.
Hugs and kisses to you both.
Love Gladys and Les.

Ciao Lisa, i think that every time is good for visiting Sydney. But for sure, Vivid Sydney must be fantastic experience. Wonderful view of the opera. Amazing pattern on the shells. Interesting note about Utzon. How sad that he had never seen his genial work.

Excellent night upclose panorama of Jorn's masterpiece and Sidney's landmark. Fine detailing of the geometric patterns of the 'sails' and accentuated by the interior warm golden lighting.
I would love to attend a musical performance here some day.
Have an excellent weekend,

Gorgeous night view of the Opera House. The exposure is perfect, and we can really appreciate the details on the "sails". I frequent lots of prominent sites here in NYC, and I often remind myself to enjoy the view and not take them for granted. I don't see how anyone could ever get tired of seeing this gem. :-)

Masterfully collected night shot, Lisa, an admirable photojob done.
This archi.-design, though seen it from diff. and many other POV's - looks intriguing yet once more. Thousand face's to the Opera...
Enjoy a nice weekend,

I like the close crop here Lisa. Together with the strong contrasts and the sweeping lines of the 'sails' it makes for a punchy and graphic shot.
Enjoy are marvellous weekend.

I completely agree with your note, this building really is the epitome of Australia for me, anytime I think of your beautiful country I think of this, and of the scenes you have composed with it and the beautiful skyline of the city. This is a unique scene of it too, one unlike I have seen before. I can totally see what you mean about this festival of lights bringing a unique vibe to everything. Love the warm golden tones flooding out from beneath.
Cool workshop too, the guy is rather spooky looking in it, which I always like!

Maestoso spettacolo, fantastica nitidezza, fantasmagorica notturna della magnifica architettura, bravissima Lisa, Reginetta della notte

A superb series of images of this festival. I'm very glad that Sydney utilizes and publicizes it's famous landmarks so well and you show the results to us!
This is my favourite so far. The delicate pattern of those sails has been redrawn in a wonderful way. And the little engineer in me keeps thinking how it was accomplished. That surely needed a lot of planning ahead!
mkamionka (38329) 2014-06-03 6:54
it is a truly extraordinary piece of architecture indeed, so recognizable and unique. There are several Eiffel Towers or Statues of Liberty but to my knowledge only one Opera like this.
I hope to be able to see it one day as well.
Great reportage with so many various presentation. The geometry offers incredible composing opportunities. You have used it perfectly.

Wonderful photo showing the brilliant lighting effects on the Opera House. Sharpness, exposure and colour are great. I was there this year (my first time), and I know it was difficult to get a decent photo because the images kept changing, but the low light levels meant long exposure times which blurred the fast moving projected images.
It's worth noting that this image is a faithful reproduction of how the Opera House looked in the mid 1960s, when the tiled roof had not been finished. The framework you see is still actually there, under the white ceramic tiles.

so this happens every May? a yearly thing? any specific reason why for the celebration.
Looks pretty cool, and is it only for one night or does it go on for a few nights? I'll stop asking questions now... :)
these shells look so cool like this, and its easy to see why you'd want to take out the camera and tripod...tripod DID come out right? lol
attractive black hour photo, the yellows and golds blend in perfectly. Wish I were here too!
see you around

it seems that the veils are open by the wind, nice details of the concrete structure well lighted (and taken by you!)
My warmest regards
