Photographer’s Note
Today another bit of Sydney history.
In the middle of Sydney harbour sits Pinchgut Island on which is Fort Denison. The island was quarried early on for stone for building.
It was also used to dump problem convicts with a supply of bread and water. Sharks made sure that they didn't escape. Quite a few convicts were also hung on the island.
When the Crimea war was on people got sacred that Russia might invade Sydney (They didn't!) so Fort Denison was built on the island.
A cannon was fired at 1 o'clock every day for ships to accurately set their clocks, now a cute custom that continues - hence the smoke.
These days you can visit the island, explore the dungeons, enjoy the fabulous views or have lunch at a cafe.

Hey Ian,
A clear and colorful photo, I wish you had a wider angle, or wouldnt crop the marvelous skyline in the background - it`s really impressive. Interesting to see the city retains some of it`s former colonial elements, mingling nicely with the modern.
Best regards.
