The yachts in the image were sailing in a regatta near Sydney last Saturday. They are located in the Tasman sea just outside Pittwater and off the coast from Palm Beach Lion Island and Barrenjoey Headland. The image was taken from a cruise boat the MV Lady Kendall just after it had entered the Hawkesbury River from Broken Bay and just after it had left Brisbane Water. If all of this sounds confusing, at this part of the NSW coast five water bodies meet. Brisbane Water is just North of Sydney and it is nowhere near Brisbane.
The cruise boat, M.V. Lady Kendall II, is a majestic fully licensed traditional timber cruiser which is the last of the mini liners that was purpose built for Ansett Airlines for their Hayman Island operation. It is a 34 metre (106ft) long, twin screw, traditionally styled, all-timber boat.
This cruise, called the "Four Island Cruise" is approximately 6 1/2 hours trip from Gosford on Brisbane Water through the waterways of Broken Bay, past Lion Island in Broken Bay, around Dangar Island and Milson Island in the Lower Hawkesbury River, follow the shore of Kuring-gai Chase National Park enter into Pittwater Barrenjoey Headland, travel around Scotland island and return out of Pittwater to head back to Gosford.
Lion Island is located at -33.549979, 151.318417

Scotland Island, Brisbane Waters and nowhere near either....no wonder it sounds confusing...our forefathers were a little traditional and unimaginative in naming places, or maybe just longing for home:) A wonderful panoramic capture here of these boats in full sail- I love the directionality of the wind. The soft pink hues in the cloud mass on the horizon are wonderful. A shame about the sharpness but a very educational shot none the less and as you say taken under quite difficult conditions
Thanks for sharing
