These are the amazing sand dunes of Stockton Beach. They are 32 kilometres long and are the largest moving sand mass in the Southern Hemisphere. The traditional caretakers of this land are the Worimi people, a sea people, who have inhabited this extraordinary treasure for more than 50,000 years. I visited these sand dunes at dawn. In the solitude and silence, you can feel their spirits walking with you.

Have a nice weekend!
holmertz (38883) 2014-08-02 6:43
Fantastic dunes, marvellously shaped and captured at the right moment when the light was the best. This is one of those contributions to TE that actually teach me something about the world.
photoray (11097) 2014-08-02 7:03
Excellent sunrise view of the Stockton Beach sand dunes, red/brown waves accentuated by the animal tracks. The dunes like a giant crescent curving, and contrasted by the flatland on the right.
Would enjoy being here also at sunrise to feel Nature.
snunney (80897) 2014-08-02 7:13
This is truly beautiful. Amazing light and colours. The ripples in the sand, which are captured in great detail, impart great depth to the image. Well worth getting up very early for. Have a great Sunday.
npecanhuk (62726) 2014-08-02 7:24

Noel_Byrne (22270) 2014-08-02 8:23
What a spectacle this is, the strong curve of the base of the dune is composed so perfectly to make this a very fluid picture, a perfect compliment to the fluid lines that lead so well in from the foreground. I love your comment too, as you say you an almost feel the spirits walking with you, it shows a deep connection to this otherworldly place. How cool would it be to capture one of these sprits walking proudly across the scene.
Hope you're having a great weekend, best wishes from soggy, oh so soggy, Ireland.
dta (64156) 2014-08-02 8:28
A superb dune landscape , with an elegant curve , beautiful riddles . Of course , the splendid light increases the wonderful colors .
miumiu (5614) 2014-08-02 9:13
Wonderful view of this large dune.
l like the tiny footprint in the foreground.
Here is amazing peaceful atmosphere.
The colours are warm, splendid and beautiful.
tyro (19368) 2014-08-02 9:25
Ciao cara Lisa,
This is a stunning photograph of a beautiful place and I am immediately reminded of Rosemary's (SnapRJW) fabulous pictures of the orange sand dunes in Namibia.
Your composition is superb, the curve of this enormous dune sweeping around and carrying the viewer from the nearest foreground (where we see in very fine detail the little footprints of some small creature) way off to the distant horizon. The light and colours and stunning, your exposure perfect and the details and sharpness exquisite.
Tell me, because I've been trying to find out more on the internet about these people, do the Worimi people still live here or have they now become integrated into society in the cities or have they suffered abuse as with many native Australians?
A fabulous photograph, Lisa.

rasterman (311) 2014-08-02 10:37
Wow beautiful picture with great light and colors. I love the sand's texture and those details we could see everywhere. Perfect shot. Congratulations
cornejo (29495) 2014-08-02 10:57
Hello dear Lisa, lovely view of the beautiful landscape of dunes, very well captured with a great pov with pretty good picture. A beautiful picture taken with a wonderful light, very good sharpness, depth and quality. An excellent job perfectly done, congratulations my friend. Thanks for sharing this beautiful work.
Good night and good Sunday.
All the best from southern Spain.
macjake (54264) 2014-08-02 10:58
so my question to you right away is....where the HECK has this photo been all these years!!!
You'd think this would be one subject you'd be posting often. Can't believe its been kept a secret from us for so long :)
Or perhaps you have posted a photo from here before, a long time ago perhaps?
my favorite part are the tine footsteps? that creep and craw across the frame along the bottom.
and those long vertical lines with the sweeping curve is breathtaking.
what a scene this is!
ktanska (24456) 2014-08-02 11:07
Again a golden sunrise moment. Colour of sand is magnificient and texture of those tiny waves shows so well on low angle light. And it is interesting to see those tiny tracks on the foreground.
asajernigan (20956) 2014-08-02 14:27
This is a fine shot of this impressive dune. The lines are great creating many POI throughout. The red hue created by the sand and the early morning light is nice and is contrasted nicely by the blue sky.
maria-v1981 (10814) 2014-08-02 14:37
Lovely..... what an amazing variety of colours & shades... Beautiful scenery. Outstanding composition.
abmdsudi (41434) 2014-08-02 19:58
The best angled light that day has offered you, the moments when golden sunrays hit on the sand dune at an acute angle turning into otherworldly landscape The subtle shadows, textures and ripples in the dynamic sand add to this delicate image and the crescent lead all the way into the distance. Rich and gutsy in tremendous depth, that's beauty crafted by nature. Fabulous, Congrats.
kabel (1615) 2014-08-02 20:18
Hello Lisa, extraordinary image of the dunes. Perfect technically. Australia has so many wonderful places to visit. Amazing country...
worldcitizen (6663) 2014-08-02 20:45
This is such a beautiful scene; it resembles a desert more than a beach. I like the golden color and the warm sunlight. The curves, patterns, and ripples are all amazing, and those tiny footprints near the bottom of the frame are a great detail. We know there's been some life on that beach, but at the moment you captured this image it seemed to be silent and desolate. Very nice! :-)
Antipodean (1615) 2014-08-02 21:06
Kia ora Lisa,
Nicely composed shot. Until I read your note I assumed it was somewhere in the Northern Territory. The early angled light accentuates the ripples of the dune perfectly. Cheers, Neil
sabermonajati (9051) 2014-08-02 22:26
fascinating form from sand you captured.
emka (75373) 2014-08-02 23:16
Ciao cara Lisa,
What an amazing view. The colours in sunset times make it similar to the dunes of Namibia, on Rosemary's photos. I would love to see it and feel these spirits. How nice these delicate traces. Marvelous magical place.
Signora I.F. waiting for the next trip
jjcordier (74662) 2014-08-02 23:20
Superbe photo!
jemaflor (82294) 2014-08-02 23:48
So lovely view, great landscape and perfect sharpness and light, good effect with curve and lines to give depth at you photo, tfs.
SnapRJW (30245) 2014-08-03 5:30
Hello Lisa - I'm a bit behind with TE at the moment as I've been fighting off a 'flu bug. I saw this on FB and see it posted here too. What a wonderful sand shot. As you know, I love these almost Zen like landscapes, one can lose oneself in the detail and I can relate to what you say about the Worimi people's spirit as you soak up the atmosphere. There is, to my mind, a special connection that can be made in such landscapes. The fussiness of busy lives just seems to melt away.
I am reminded of the lines penned by William Blake
To see a world in a grain of sand, / And a heaven in a wild flower, / Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, / And eternity in an hour
I think perhaps he would have felt the Worimi people's spirits too.
rigoletto (34231) 2014-08-03 9:33
hi rosemary, oh sorry, lisa vecchia...
i cannot tell you the richness and variety of golden tones i see here on my monitor, i hope you see it with the same quality as i do :) this is a wonderful dune photo. natüre is truly an adorable lady...
and, so glad to see a spot in huge australia which is spared from the wrath of greedy eyes (yes, i am still shedding tears for the barrier reef, please tell me, and grant me a relief, that someone can stop them!).
fritzi007 (3515) 2014-08-03 14:20
how are you?
Your photo is a work of art with a nice quality, very good sharpness and good comment congratulate!
Wish you a nice day
carlo62 (29677) 2014-08-04 0:58
ourania (28616) 2014-08-04 3:04
Hello dear Lisa,
you managed not only to describe the awesome natural scenery in an artistic and intriguing way but also to transmit its mystical atmosphere and the enchantment of being surrounded by these textures and colours. The graphism is wonderful, the play of light and shadows reveals some magical patterns that evoke timeless stories. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,
Cricri (103385) 2014-08-04 9:24
Hi dear Lisa
Belle soirée a toi
williewhistler (13211) 2014-08-04 14:03
such a spectacular landscape taken at the very best of times with the warm morning light accentuating those lovely shapes and textures with the animal trail a real bonus.
Simply stunning, now where did I put I put that darn map...
Kindest regards Les.
Mics (653) 2014-08-04 22:14
This is a sight to behold! Nature in all its splendor perfectly framed and captured. I super love the colors, the curve, the patterns...the overall photo itself.
Very well made :)
Have a nice day! Hugs:)
Royaldevon (27805) 2014-08-05 3:06
This is an amazing shot of a quite amazing place!
I can imagine how special the Worimi people must be for they must have evolved along with the land to be part of it.
It gives the impression of belonging to another time, another planet! I just love the ripples and the zigzag trails crossing over them.
This is a beautifully composed and very well exposed photograph.
Thank you for sharing it,
annjackman (18621) 2014-08-05 3:10
Sand dunes are one of my favourite photographic subjects and this is a cracker! Love the curves and ripples. Pin sharp and glorious light.
Best wishes, Ann
fotka (3343) 2014-08-05 5:56
Wow, what a spectacular view of golden dunes. The photo was shot in right moment with an excellent light. The sharpness is perfect so I can even see tracks of the lizards.
chawax (18902) 2014-08-05 9:43
I didn't know there were such sand deserts in Australia, you could feel in Sahara ! I could see such places a few months ago in Morocco and the best moment is either at sunrise or sunset, the light gives wonderful colours to the sand like on this picture ! You used very well the lines on the sand in the foreground to add depth. The composition is very well balanced and the sharpness is excellent. A great shot !
PS : I just posted a picture that may talk to you ;)
willperrett (6451) 2014-08-06 13:30
I remember Anna Bay and Stockton Beach well, although I can't identify where you were when you took this photograph, as you've - deliberately - given us a near-abstract cresent of gold. It's beautiful, and you have managed to eliminate tyre tracks and indeed any evidence of human intervention. As you say, you can feel the spirits walking with you... My effort at shooting Anna Bay is here!
daddo (23276) 2014-08-07 3:00
Ciao Lisa. Twofold reason why I am writing this critique: firstly for the creative nature of your photo with its unique POV and lovely rich colours and secondly because of your sensitive words about a people who loved this land but who were mistreated and misunderstood by the invaders. When i walk in the forest near my home I can also feel their spirits near warbling creeks and fern tree gullies. Sadly their voices and songs have gone forever from this part of Australia.I wonder what creatures left those tracks on the sand. Ciao cara. Klaudio.
mirosu (12784) 2014-08-07 10:13
A glamorous sand dunes scene in very nice light and a visual feast for the eyes; excellent sand colors which naturally compete for attention. But the blue sky is all that important factor needed to separate from the rest and obviously creating that effective impact and contrast against the yellow sand. You certainly know how to find the right subject, angles and sight, the favorable conditions to make the best of the available elements. Skill-fully taken shot indeed.
Very well done.
ChrisJ (95242) 2014-08-08 3:31
And here I was thinking you'd recently been to somewhere more exotic, like the Sahara, Namibia, or the Gobi? Newcastle is a little less exotic, but this photo is nonetheless impressive. Perfect sharpness with a wonderful warm cold color contrast between the yellow sand and blue sky. Tfs!
ifege (10223) 2014-08-09 8:08
Hi Lisa from Sweden
And here I thought you had got yourself away from the coast and into the outback. Wrong again! A superb sand dunes photo all the same.
adores (35220) 2014-08-10 6:49
A great shot of a beautiful place. The textures and the golden light are just perfect. I like the little footprints in foreground, probably left by some reptile.
krzychu30 (15354) 2014-08-10 23:28
wonderful landscape! It looks absolutely out of this World.Love the patterns created on the dunes and the golden tones emphasized so well by the strong light.
Btw.this zig-zag patterns in the right corner-is it a trace of a snake?
CLODO (29814) 2014-08-14 5:49
How didI miss it?
I thought of Namibia. You have an interesting bow of orange sand seeming to come from the rug earth, and I like the lizard traces on the ripple marks well lighted by the lateral sun. The deep blue sky reinforces the vibrancy of the ochre hues.
mkamionka (29810) 2014-08-20 6:11
this is so beautiful. I love deserts. I had a pleasure to live in California for a couple of years and had a bit taste of it. I loved it. This seems like a place which I would like to visit frequently. I did not know you have such landscapes so close to Sydney, I thought they are more in the center or in the west.
Fantastic light emphasized the extraordinary pattern.
A real master piece of nature and of you.
Silvio1953 (118553) 2014-08-25 0:20
Angshu (55039) 2014-09-01 4:57
I saw this stunning shot somewhere before...fb? maybe!
But this looks so gorgerous in beta TE...the details of each grain of sand, the 3D of each sand ripple and then the giant spine as it curves towards the horizon.
I also hated to see this stunner dangling at 98 and so I decided to push it to 3 figures which it well deserves!
serp2000 (38998) 2014-09-01 10:02
I just take off my hat... Superb! I want to mark this photo as my favorite, but my folder is full ((. Fantastic landscape, perfect sharpness and fine DoF! Just no words!
speedymanu (3575) 2014-09-10 8:09
A graceful curve with a nice opposition between the tiny ripples and the rather chaotic aspect of the flat piece of land. The tiny prints on the right act as a lovely detail.
Have a nice day
