Cartoon becomes reality! Or life follows art... The Ettamogah in Table Top near Albury is a cartoon pub that was featured in the now defunct Australasian Post magazine. The cartoonist Ken Maynard, loving empty spaces and having nothing around him, enjoyed an area just outside of Albury at Table Top, named Ettamogah, thus christening the name of his now famous pub the "Ettamogah Pub" . The first "Ettamogah Pub" of a chain of such pubs was built there and copies now exist in various parts of Australia including Sydney, the Sunshine Coast and Cunderdin. The pub was built by businessman Lindsay Cooper and first opened in 1987. The timber building featured sloping walls and a distinctive architectural style true to the original cartoon design. The writing on the side says:
It pleases th' palate...
It tickles th' tonsils...
It kicks over th' starter motor...
It cleans out th' carby...
It eradicates fruit fly...
And tastes good too mate!

A Happy New Year to you, Will!
Geez, it sounds as though beer is pretty good stuff, judging by the writing on the side of this wonderful pub. I must try some myself sometime!
A fascinating note and a very impressive photograph to accompany it. And of course this isn't lens distortion - those walls really are leaning out at the top to give this unique building a wonderful charm all of its own. A wonderfully colourful and striking picture with good light, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.

I remember visiting this pub a few years ago and found it fascinating so it brings back happy memories of warmer times!
A cracking shot here that shows many of the pubs quirky attractions.

such a funny place, the design of the building is very special...it seems to follow in the Tower of Pisa footsteps to me. Amazingly clear and sharp photo, you needn't have copied that writing to your note actually..it's perfectly readable.
Thanks for a great picture and Happy New Year!

hi will. bah, i had to study some anatomy, botany and zoology to understand the side writings, finally it was only the last line which i found essential... it looks like a wise idea to found this pub, while could be dangerous for attracting kids. my favourite element is the truck on the roof. nice and charming work from the archives.

What a weird and cool place, it really is like a cartoon come to life. All the little touches like the truck on the roof, the phone box and how BAR is written on the windows makes this place look really surreal. I love the angle you chose to shoot this from too, showing the unusual design. certainly a one of a kind, cool to learn about this in your gallery. Cheers!

Hello Will - Happy New Year to you! I imagine this quirky place did some good business over the festive season. It really does have the look of a cartoon and I bet passing visitors are attracted to it like wasps to jam. Your composition shows off the madness of the architecture very well. I wonder, do you think the tilt is more noticeable when you go in for a beer than it is when you come out after having a few? Warm regards Rosemary

Looks and sounds a very interesting place for 'drinking' and you have great sense of smell! It looks like a cottage loaf Lol! hinting at so much more... Some people photograph robins, portraits, architectures, you do classic Aussie pub in your own trademark style. Good idea and I can't think of a better pub name than your title and there's more sense of context and 'story', brilliant in colour in an interesting perspective that really makes you wonder around and think.
I like the inclusion of the red Brits phone box, but what I really like most about this one is the bold white fonts definitely catches the eye as strong anchor point here to pick up other details better and hard to miss the menu; sounds great and 'yummy'. You really make life in here showing interesting place to others to show them places they would not get to see otherwise, the great majority will never come Down Under and the outback, you did your best here to show it. And as for the Pub, yes still a pub. Good to see the fun element in this shot and your excellent narratives. Fascinating photo work, Will, tfs. Cheers!!
Wishing you and yours; Wealthy, Healthy and Happy 2014.

Gidday dear Will
Happy new year to you and yours! Good to see you back posting, especially when it's an Aussie one, of this iconic pub. There's an Ettamoogah also near Windsor now, so the next time you return, you won't have to travel as far as Albury ;) nice rich colours and contrasts and you chose a good angle to demonstrate the writing on the wall.
Good one, oh and thanks for your advice on Layers. Unfortunately you assume I have a lot more knowledge than I actually do ;)

That's a very funny idea! I like the tilt that makes it so original, the truck on the roof and what seems to be a dog near the entrance. Very nice details and the photo is very good. Your pov lets us see lots of details and the cloudy sky makes it really special!
