Gorgeous shot with incredibly good exposure thanks to your ND filter. Very nice, original composition with the red arch clearly catching the eye before the pinnacles in the back. I have never shot Velvia but I hold on to my old film camera with the intention of taking it along once on a photo trip and giving this film a try. Digital is simply so much easier!

Well chosen foreground of those arch in the background. Your timing here is perfect to get the proper light condition as it accentuates the overall picture. Another excellent shot.

Hi Ryan,
The colours and light are really superb here, aswell as the varying textures of the rocks which also create a great natural frame to the beautiful scene beyond. Great work and a nice dedication to Velvia!

Hey Ryan
Another impressive capture here. The strong vibrant orange/red up against the more hazy yellow in the middle is superb. The image is sharp and the rocks at the bottom are holding very good shadow detail and really draw the eye also.
Excellent note to accompany.
Good work

Hi Ryan, Like you I went to digital expecting less PS work, with the same result. I like the convenience and cost of digital relative to Velvia (which is about A$20.00/roll + as much again for processing in Australia). This shot shows well another advantage of Velvia, dynamic range. In this shot there is bright and dark and nothing blown out or black. Great composition using the deeply coloured rock to frame the rocky outcrops in the BG. cheers, Steve

This is quite spectacular. Ohtherworldly actuallly, that orange light slaps you right in the forehead! I had never heard of Velvia film but I know the travails of scanning prints. Good job.

Seems inspired by the many gothic flicks one gets to see with
a matching and superbly striking colour scheme. here is no facet
which really needs to be modified here. Great is all I can say,
for you and your image!

Hi Ryan,
always a pleasure to visit your gallery...I get a lot of inspiration and I see that I have still to learn a lot..
I also did a lot with Fuji Velvia..
compliments, it´s a great quality for a scan.

A fantastic light for this well known point. When I was there it was cloudy... You are right about Velvia. Just yesterday I was making some order in my Velvia archive, and I noticed how Velvia already incorporated any Photoshop saturation, level adjustment and most of the fency modern software tools.
Cheers Stefano

Hello Ryan,
A famous location, every serious photographer has been there, except me ;-)
Your work is so good my friend, it has always so much dedication inside, you are very high on my list of favorite photographers here on TE because everytime you produce stunning material. Or is it also my love for the good old Velvia, a film i miss sometimes because of his very deep colour toning which still can hardly be produced by a RAW file and the pp.
A very beautiful picture and if there is one reason to go back to Utah that it's this location. Thanks for uploading this and the Velvia...a stunning shot.
I could put on all your images a green star, but that would look rather silly, but here i can't let it pass. Velvia....thanks Ryan..!!!!

Wow project! This the one of the best captured Arch shots I have ever seen on TE. Lot of respect especially is taken by analogue technique and more with Velvia. It required good mettering! Great work Man...!

Hi Ryan,
It didn't die yet!?
I used the Minolta Dimage Scan Elite III in the past. Worked very nice, since it focussed the slide and took a colour profile. Yeah, quite some work as well. A high definition scan could take up to 5 minutes...
But look at the results!!! Even with the VelviaVision plugin you do not get that result - though it gets pretty close.
Yes, it exists. A post processing plugin called 'VelviaVision'. ;-)
Greetings!

A beautiful job of composition. I also miss the old camera at times, mainly those with red rock, only it was E100vs that I preferred.

Prehistoric technology for a prehistoric vista. I enjoy it as much as the rest. Nostalgia rises like the sun over the canyon. F22? Don't see that too often. Thanks for the memories, Ryan. Best, -Hugh

Hi Ryan,
A beautiful picture and touching dedication… I finally abandoned Velvia a few days before my Iceland trip last summer when I couldn’t bring myself to fork out 500 plus euro on a supply of film for the trip when just about everyone else had long switched to digital. You’re right about it being hard work with scanning but you’ve done a magnificent job here. The red glow on the underside of the arch literally leaps out of the picture and the buttes in the distance are beautifully framed. What really brings it to life for me though is a small detail, the thin line of golden light along the edge of the rocks at the bottom.

Hi Ryan
Interesting contrast beween the rich red rock in the foreground and the somewhat mystical formations behind. The sharpness is very good and you've dealt well with the difficult light.

Ryan - an intense landscape photo! I love the strong but warm light, and the way the rock formations in the distance are framed by the orange one in the foreground.

Ryan,
a real eye-popper and an excellent advertisement for Velvia - a film that I never used and only got to know through TE from people dedicated like you. Looking into this shot and being in awe with the colors that you achieved here through the bouncing back of the warm morning sun is stunning. It makes me really curious about this film and ponder to go back to my old camera and try a little bit around charged with a velvia. But, I have to confess that the easiness of the digital hooked me so much up that I probably won't do it. The only exception for not using my digital camera are my plans to do some long hours exposure to get some star tracks. Does velvia suit for that too?

Hi Ryan,
Absolutely stunning! There is the wild beauty of the landscape, there is the POV, the light and, of course, the colours(!). Having suffered much trying to get anything decent from my slides, I am amazed by the quality of the scan and PP here. Scanning can be very tricky in cases that don't look so difficult, but here that light on the BG looks really hard to tame. If I hadn't read the note, probably I wouldn't suspect that it was a scan.
Regards, José.

It seems difficult to forget the old film days but every now and then you read that they are alive. I am not far away from standing there, in late May, so I will be thinking of you and the old days when you could not just do 25 pictures of the same location but had to think twice what you did. The orange glow is strong and beautiful and I love the golden sun light in the back. It makes me want to leave right now :) Barbara.

Hi Ryan:
Ah, there really is nothing like Velvia. This is one of the best shots of Mesa Arch I've ever seen, and in a way I like it better than your other Mesa shots, because it's different. With only half the arch showing, the focus is on the light rather than the arch itself, and I like that with lighting like this. Wonderful job. Makes me almost wish I'd shot film (other than that I'd be completely broke if I did). :)

Hi Ryan
nice shot, I love the intense light and colours in the FG, shown with good sharpness. The Bg looks amazing, it's a pity the haze tha blurs the view. But for being a scan looks amazing
great job

Absolutely fantastic shot Ryan!
Your image are really inspirational and make me go out and shoot more landscapes! Lovely colours and tones of this Mesa Arch in Island in the Sky in Utah. Good compo, contrast between orange sendstone and grey valley! One day I must go back to Utah!
I enjoy it a lot and thanks for sharing!

Old or new ones, your photos are all high level.
Although the location is important, the equipment is important, the critical point is the photographer, and obviously you are a very good one, despite location or equipment.
This is not a traditional composition...it's a wonderfull composition, with warm tones (I like it so much). It makes me want to be there so much...that's how evaluate a photography.
Keep posting.

Hi Ryan.
Superb shot and remarkably good scanning job. I found your comments interesting, although I had never discovered Velvia when I used a film SLR. The colour rendition is magnificent here, with the red area looking as though it is molten hot, and you composed the shot well to give sharp detail up front and haziness surrounding the landforms behind. Just a marvellous image.

Andrew

Hi Ryan.
I'm a beginner in photography, so when I started taking some pictures it was already in digital. This way I can't feel your love with the pre-digital techniques.
But one thing I can tell you and I have no doubt: you did a great job here!
To me it's a favorite!
Thank's for sharing such a beautiful picture.

The worth of getting up early pays very well in this rare moments of nature. The image shows nature alone beautifully rendered in an atmospheric manner with a play of colours as the sun rises. The early morning orange is amazing as it reflects and glows from beneath is remarkable. Fantastic work Ryan!

This is a lovely scene, captured at just the right moment. Excellent composition and exposure on this shot -- the shadow detail is not lost, and the light is not overpowering. And I love the layering of the hoodoos and mesas in the distance. This stirs fond memories of my all-too-short trip to the canyonlands last year.
