Photographer’s Note

This is the image I was attempting to take, at 11:02 Houston time yesterday, in support of Aleksei's idea of everyone taking a picture during the same minute all around the world. See !Shots taken EXACTLY at 17:02 UTC on 19 March. I arrived at this spot four minutes too early, and there was nowhere I could stop or park, so I had to keep moving. I snapped several shots out of the driver's side window as I passed by the sculpture, and tried to get all the way around the airport for another try. I almost made it, but I got behind a slow-moving car and didn't get that far. Click here to see the shot I got at 11:02 instead.

I don't know the name of the artist or the sculpture, but it's comprised of seven monoliths embedded in the ground, each one containing the colors and imagery of a country's flag. I'm not absolutely certain of all the countries represented, but I think I know most of them.

Moving from the right to the left-- The far right flag could be Mexico, but I don't see an eagle and snake emblem in the center panel, so it's more likely to be Italy's flag. The next one is probably the European Union flag, next is the United States, and then Great Britain. The one just behind and a little to the left of G.B. is most likely Canada's, but I can't see it well enough to tell for certain.

The next one is a puzzle for me. The back side of the monolith seems to be a bronze color, but I don't know if that's part of the flag's color or not. If it is, it could possibly be Belgium's flag, except the Belgian flag's colors read black, yellow and red (left to right), and it would be upside down. The other flags all seem to have been rotated nearly ninety degrees clockwise before being stuck in the ground. If it were Belgium's, the stripes would be horizontal in this image. It more likely is Germany's flag, with the red and yellow bands on the far side of our vision.

The next flag, right to left, is Japan's, but you can only see a tiny edge of it peeking out from behind the final flag, which could be French Guiana or France, so I'm assuming it's France (given the status of the other represented countries).

The image was rotated a few degrees counter-clockwise, cropped closer to the flags, the levels were adjusted to compensate for the dark, overcast day, and then it was sharpened before uploading.
