Photographer’s Note
I spent ten days in Phoenix for the 2003 Supercomputing Conference, and walked about eight blocks through the downtown area on my way to the Civic Plaza. This shot was taken on one of my first days there. As I reached the Civic Plaza, I turned back around toward my hotel, and saw all these huge palm trees jutting up from within the cityscape. There are huge areas of the Southwestern United States that have become living areas for large numbers of people by bringing water in from elsewhere. Phoenix is one of those areas.
I did manage to squeeze in enough time for a trip to the Grand Canyon while I was there, too. I'll probably be posting a few of those shots here, but more of them will end up on TrekLens and TrekNature, I imagine.
The only post-processing done to this image was to sharpen it and adjust the levels a little before reducing the size.
