[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note [French]
The Yellowstone National Park counts nearly 200 geysers. Most famous is Old Faithful, located at Upper Geyser Basin. With the regularity of a metronome, it spouts out every 70 minutes to 40 m in height.
The 70 minutes, it is the time which it is necessary so that water presents in the hole of the geyser exceeds the point of vaporization or boiling point. Everyone knows that water boils at 100°C on the sea level and free air. But Yellowstone is located in altitude. Moreover, water is captive in impermeable narrow drains. The magma present under the earth's crust at low depth under the park of Yellowstone heats water slowly. The pressure thus increases much and in spite of the going beyond of the 100°C, water still does not boil until reaching a critical temperature which depends on the pressure accumulated in the water column. Suddenly, balance is broken, water passes to the state vapor and this one spawning time a passage towards the free air by involving water in a violent gushing. When all the vapor is released, that the pressure decreased, the drains fill again of the streaming water cooled in contact with the air, and the phenomenon starts again 70 minutes later.
