October Canopy
Superior Hiking Trail
Duluth, Minnesota

from a beautiful autumn day along the Superior Hiking Trail as it winds through Duluth, Minnesota.

The North Woods (Laurentian Mixed Forest) make up a large region of Northern Minnesota (as well as parts of Wisconsin, Michigan, New England, and Southern Ontario). The area serves as a transition between the boreal forest to the North and the Big Woods to the south (with many characteristics of both). It has ares of both broadleaf and conifer forests, bogs, and swamps. Conifers include pines, spruces, firs, and junipers; deciduous types include aspens, oaks, paper birches mountain ash, and maples. The north woods of Minnesota has an annual precipitation range of about 21-32 inches ... and a normal annual temperature about 34ºF (1ºC).

Hi John,

I really like the beautiful transparency and play of light with overlapping leaves.

This ascendant view is inspiring shows autumn at its best. You can't go wrong with such a striking combination of sky blue and golden colours. Like the title: Canopy is a fine word.

I never tire of seeing fall foliage shown this way and you've done a great job composing this one. I like the off-center convergence of the trees to make this very dynamic shot. Super colors, contrast and sharpness.

What a beautiful picture! What colour and view! Great places for hiking and relaxing, John! I think that you were flat capturing this shot. You did a very good job transferring this poem to us! The blue contrasts beautifully with the golden tones!

The upwards POV gave strong perspective and depth on to the canopy and sky.

Oh, John,
what a wonderful view looking straight up that way. I love the different shades of gold among the leaves and the darker, vertical lines of the tree trunks in contrast and the bits of blue sky showing through. wow, this is sooo beautiful and colourful, it remind me for the National Geographic wallpapers! I like this kind of pictures, I tried to do something similar this autumn, but it was too late - there was a litlle leaves stayed. This time your autumn picture is not underexposed, is exellent I would say.

Hey John,

A very fresh photo, I`d name "lost in the woods" or something alike. Like the composition - it leaves (ha) just enough breathing space (the sky), but is also thick at the same time. Fine details and definitely amazing colors.

Olá John, this absolutely magnificent and in my opinion, one of your best pictures. It's not only the angle but the strong effect of perspective with trunks coming from everywhere in direction to the same point. And the best are the colors, this bright yellow and some parts of blue sky for contrast. Gorgeous. Congrats.

I like a lot the golden light here, it feels crisp, clear and warm, exactly how a perfect autumn day should feel. the upward looking view and converging lines of the trees create an interesting perspective and quite an uplifting feeling, I like that a lot. beautiful photo.

Perfect POV and framing, amazing colours and light! It's a wonderful image of Autumn. I don't think that a bit of OE would be a flaw here, but it's highly remarkable how you were able to avoid it, specially while keeping the trunks so well exposed.

Cool shot John. I love the North Woods, but I have only been up there in the summers. I took a similar shot this past Summer.

I'm sure you would have soiled your jacket for this POV :-), but worth it. Love the transparency of the yellow leaves as light filters through them. A good case of reverse vertigo with the converging perspective of the trunks. The combination of the yellow leaves with the blue sky is excellent. Beautiful nature post!

This is a interesting pint of view that mixed with the contrast between the yellow leafs and the sky always gives good results. I had try the same but later at winter time with no leafs bus using the contrast of the clouds with the sky as background.
