Photographer’s Note

I went into my picture box today, as I had to find a photo which would suit the great victory won by Barack Obama.
This is the one I chose, because this statue really represents the American Dream for Freedom, Equality and all Human Rights. Unfortunately, for the last few years, we wondered what had become of the American Dream!
Well, today, it is more real than ever! Who could have dreamt in 1956, when Rosa Parks initiated the bus boycott in Alabama, that 52 years later, one of her peers would become the Presidednt of this great country!...
I also read in the news this morning that 78% of the French people would have voted for Barack! So, with this in mind, I think that the Statue of Liberty is, amongst other things, a symbol of Franco-American Friendship.

It was conceived and built by the Alsacian sculptor "Bartholdi" for the statue itself (He used his mother as a model.) and by the famous engineer "Eiffel" for the inside frame. It was offered to the US as a sign of friendship in 1886, 10 years after the supposed date which would have commemorated the 100th anniversary of the American independence, for which the French had given their help.
However, the governments had nothing to do with it. All the money came from private funding; and as they could not raise enough, Bartholdi made a suggestion to the Parisian firm "Gaget & cie": Why not make miniature statues of liberty, and sell them, in order to raise funds?
No sooner said than done: The enterprise was a great success on each side of the Atlantic, and the Americans called the miniatures "gadgets" after the name of the makers. The word is used nowadays for any object which is small and new.
The Statue was built and carried across thanks to French financing, and the Americans raised the money for the building of the pedestal and the erection of the statue.

Long live Franco-American friendship! Long live friendship in the world between Blacks and Whites, Africans, Indonesians, Christians, Muslims...
Barack, you have been elected, but people put so much hope in you, you have a VERY difficult task in front of you!
However, Bartholdi and his American partners "didn't know their task was impossible; that's why they did it!" (Mark Twain)
well, we think the same applies to you Barack!

Sorry about the quality of the picture! It's a scan from 2005. But I really wanted to post it as a symbol!
The photo was taken during a boat trip on the Hudson river round Manhattan.
