Photographer’s Note
Newberry Volcano National Monument is in the Deschutes National Forest in central Oregon. At 7985ft (2433m) the highest peak of this 500 square mile shield volcano is Paulina Peak on the caldera rim and is where this image was taken. The exact volume of the volcano cannot be determined as it is so big and heavy that much of it has sunk underground.
Rainwater and melting snow filled the crater to form, originally, a single, large lake similar to nearby Crater Lake. Eruptions continued underneath the lake, until the lava flows broke the surface, dividing it in two.
The lake you see on this image is Paulina Lake. The other lake is East Lake. You can see both lakes in the WS. The volcano is still active, the magma lying about 2 miles under East Lake. The crater flanks are studded with cinder cones.
We had arrived at Pat & Larry’s earlier that day and they had kindly invited us to stay with them during the Oregon part of our trip. They made us very welcome and I want to dedicate this image to them and thank them once again for their generous hospitality. We all went together to the top of Paulina Peak for the sunset. You can see by the tree on the right and the strange cloud that it was a windy night!

Hello Kath,
Feather finds Feathers (in the sky) how nice ;-)
But also great light, all captured in a very good picture. The D300 has done a great job here in light control and colour management.
Although i love the light on the tree on the right, maybe a large step to the left to show more from the lake, or am i aksing too much?
Looks like that isn't possible at all, so forgive my call for something impossible.
A real good one Kath, especially that light what shines and strikes the trees in front...

Hello Kath
I hope your trip to the US was a good one, now this has everything from gorgeous lighting, excellent subtle colourings, pinpoint sharpness and I like the composition. The hazy clouds and BG work very well against the more sharper lake. Excellent exposure detail throughout, top work which never fails when you post. Look forward to more from your trip.

Another well processed presentation, highly processed I should say.
the blue is a bit distracting I don't know why you chose it to be that bright, I admit it makes the difference in your composition.
the clarity and sharpness is amazing. I like also the way you handled the light here, the rock in the front should be a bit overexposed but its not! HDR? or just some RAW adjustments?
whatever
Kath you did a great job again!!

Beautiful allround Kath...from colours to compo with that triangle of the lake peeking through the Fg slopes, the glorious colours of the sky in the horizon, the layers of mountains beyond the lake & the wonderful light! But believe me I cannot take my eyes away from the cloud on the right...never seen a formation like that before, like a tornado in the making! Do you have any idea about that (asking too much I guess)? Excellent shot!

Spectacular view, Kath. You manage to succeed in a carper format! :))) The picture is gorgeous: sunny colorful FG, beautiful presence of the lake, nice sequence of layers and marvellous tones in the sky. The WS is a surprise as it shows a much more arid landscape due to the FG. Now I'm imagining a stupid ride on a sleigh downhill, begining with this FG... ;-)

Hi Kath. What to say that hasn't been said before? It is hard to look at something as beautiful as this and support the chaos theory which assumes that creation and such beauty came to be without a guiding power. A scene like this makes one humble and all credit to you for capturing it in all its subtle nuances. Regards. Klaudio.

Hello Kath -
The square format works well here, but the scene is top notch and the capture is spot on the money. What a beautiful evening to be out taking images with cross pond friends. Larry and Pat chose the perfect place and evening.

Hi Kath,
The scenery is very beautiful, but the compo and the light management is really outstanding. We made a great graphical arrangement with all those shapes (lake, hills, trees, clouds, etc.). As time passes, I care less about standard layouts and I have always liked square framings, but I think it's the first time I see a post of yours that it isn't 2x3. And I like it!

Hi, Kath -
Taking a moment from savoring Obama's victory to wander elsewhere on the web....
This is one gorgeous picture. Unusual choice of square frame, but it works well. And almost surreal lighting. Great clouds, too. A little oversharpened in the lower right, I think, but a minor point.
Now I'm going to go TRY to relax.

A masterful display of lighting and colors, smooth as silk, on top of an astonishing view. The kind of view I can keep looking at for hours. Been repeatedly to and all over Oregon, but never in this specific region and I should definitely do something about it... Love the format, it fits the framing to a T. Another wonderful presentation bearing all of your trademarks, TFS! Have a nice day, I'll be seeing you.
