Photographer’s Note
At Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone National Park, this large 37-foot (11 meter) cone was created by limestone deposits brought to the surface by hot water over hundreds of years. It is estimated to be about 2500 years old and is now dormant. Travertine may have sealed the small orifice at the top or, when the cone reached a certain height, perhaps the water pressure was insufficient to lift the hot water to the top.
