The pyramid of Pyramid Lake, which gives the lake it's name. It's a limestone tufa formation.
The lake is staggeringly beautiful, violently blue and set in a harsh landscape.
It was in the high 90s when I took the picture so there was a lot of heat haze above the lake.
The lake is part of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribes' Reservation and is also home to the ancient cui-ui lakesucker, the Tui chub and Lahontan cutthroat trout (the world record cutthroat trout was caught here).
It's also home to American White Pelicans, which look beautiful skimming above the lake in formation.
Apparently there are hot springs at the west end of the lake as well. The River Truckee feeds this lake from Lake Tahoe. |
