Two doors down (literally down the hill) from the Hard to Shoot church is this splendid old Victorian style house. There is nothing really special about it other than it is in a town that has seen better days and it has not been destroyed by some well intentioned but completely uninformed rehabilitater.

This one is also looking up hill at an angled structure with no great position to stand to make the shot. I chose to stand the house upright and let the rest do as it will. As a complete aside the place is for sale for less than 200K US.

hi Greg,
I can honestly tell you that I have no firm opinion on distortions, sometimes they works, sometimes not, and I don't think I can define what makes distortion work. here it's not too badly distorted, and since you are obviously looking uphill, this would pretty much be what the eye saw, so I don't mind the tower that seems to be leaning a bit.
but what I really like is how you have composed the photo with the strong diagonal of the road creating a natural frame, and the beautiful shimmering light in the foreground. very, very nice.

with best regards,
Kristine

I'm not a photographer, Greg...I do not know focal length from aperture!I do know I'll learn...But as I keep saying, I know what is beautiful to me...I have a mission, to which I will shortly introduce you..My friends at TN are already aware of it.
I love this shot of yours, it's so beautiful, the surroundings green...I wish we still did not aim for the sky (if you know what i mean with skyscrapers at al) and lived in houses!
Very well done my friend!
Goldy

Hi Greg,
Not an easy picture, the trees hang a bit over the house but that is hardly to avoid i guess. Nevertheless your colour treatment and balance is very nice with very good detail on the house. 1870 is not that old....for us at least, but for US standards it must be real old ;-)
Regards, Henk

Hi Greg. Good to see such remnants of the past still standing in their original form. Nicely framed amongst the trees. Good colour and detail. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Greg,
It's an excellent shot from this beautiful Victorian house with picturesque colours. I like the attractive composition and the glittering details, the POV is very good. Beautiful image,
Have a nice day
George

Hello Greg,
another good shot. I can see the surroundings of the church are very interesting and "refreshing" All those big trees with their shades and the thick grass are an ideal environment for a morning walk and a couple of shots.
Greetings,
Donato

Hi Greg,
The beautiful old Victorian home is seen in excellent light that brings out all its old charm.
The vivid blue sky contrast effectively with the green grass as the old home is framed wonderfully by the old maple trees.
Regards, Tom

If only I had a dime for everytime I have found the house of my dreams on Trek Earth.. :) This one is so interesting to look at. Extremely beautiful!! Another fabulous picture Greg! Once again the colors are superb! These older homes have so much more character than the newer ones. Thanks for sharing this one. Great job!!

Hi Greg,

A very attactive shot. The composition and colours are wonderful. The lighting conditions are perhaps not the best but in many ways good. I thing that you have handled the lighting conditions in an excellent way. The shaded parts could easily be too dark. Really well-done. TFS and have a nice day!

Cheers,

Ulf

Hello Greg,

It looks very appealing to me!
What a bargain!

I like the aspect you have chosen. With the slope of the hill, the tower looks natural, even though it has a slight lean. It is perfectly balanced by the tree on its opposite side.
The road is a great asset and the light ... super! (I had to hesitate as the sun has been notable by its absence in England for the past couple of weeks! Global warming, but no sunshine!)

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Old, east coast Victorian homes are majestic reminders of our cultural heritage. The perspective here enhances the impact of the structure to the human observer.

Hi Greg,
The weeds and big trees with its shadows every where increase the chilly feels at this desolate corner, impressive this house look like ghost house in US films thay i had watch before, thanks for sharing the beautiful house.
Ally

Hello Greg
It was either 1870 house or Warren Station, both very good captures but my mind says this reigns supreme. I saw some beautiful old U.S homes, mainly the nice ones were in Austin, Texas, and New Orleans, but not compared to this. The round and square features are stunning as are the windows. The shadows from the trees give the capture more depth with stunning greens and blues thrown in. I was wondering how much this would be worth on todays market given that the world has gone mad for money. Well done
Regards
Jim

Best Victorian Houses I have seen in the US it has been in Eureka, CA. I am sorry about not having pictures, but not digital cameras in the 90’s when I went to California.

Anyway, nice picture of a great house. Regards.

hello greg

a nice illustration of the 'better day' splendor of this town. the light seems perfect for this scene and the presence of the trees nicely balances the lense distortion.

warm regards,
kristaps

ps. less than 200K you say? i bet, you need a multile of that to bring the place to livable standard ;))

Hello Greg,

A fine old house with an original design!
The location is picturesque, situated among all the fine old trees to provide shade on warm summer days...
Effective point of view makes the subject well framed by the trees, rich colours!

Greetings,
Pablo -

Whatever distortion there is looks completely natural to me. If the trees were actually straight they could quite easily have been leaning naturally. I don't think there is an easy answer to dealing with distortion and you have to treat each situation separately. It looks like a beautiful house and you have composed the image well making it seem to be surrounded by trees. Property prices seem very cheap in the US compared with over here.
Kath

Hi Greg,

A very nice shot with the CPL, giving you the saturated colours. The house is well framed by the large trees, and the exposure is very good throughout. Certainly cheap for a large house!

Alfred

Oh man, that is my house. Wasn't there some sign for sale?
The wide angle impression is clearly seen here and I wonder if some additional correction on PP wouldn't be adviced here. At least on the tower to the left side has some bending that doesn't look quite natural.
The colors are a real beauty!
Peter

Hello Greg,
This is such a beautiful house, and I like the foreground of trees and bright grasses. Some people might not know that here in NYC, in Brooklyn to be precise, there is a fabulous district of Victorian homes. I would like to photograph them one day. I love all the details that these houses possess, just like the one in this photo: the tower, the large porch, the abundance of windows.

I am really shocked, though, to read that it is selling for less than 200K US!!! I look at the real estate sites here frequently, and the ones in Brooklyn are currently selling for an average of 1-2 million US!!!

Ola Greg,
Que bela casa de 1870 a sua arquitectura em madeira e muito bonita gostei muito da natureza em volta da casa, belo contraste entre o verde e o azul , bom enuqadramento da foto , parabéns!!
Um abraço Gonçalo

Hi Greg,
these kind of shots are never easy, mainly due to lens distortion, but what I see here looks totally OK to me.
Strong diagonals, excellent light management, well saturated colors, and a beautiful Victorian building to look at. More than enough, buddy!
Have a great day, see ya soon.
Fulvio.

A pleasant view!
