Scene
Forest details – sometimes as a photographer we do not “…see the forest for the trees” as we are focused on the “big picture” or the “grand landscape.” But, when the weather conditions are not right or the time of day is not at its best we need to look for other things to photograph. Just by looking down at our feet or into the overgrown under story off of a forest trail we can find an image that is worthy of our time. My wife pointed this scene out to me as I was focusing on some of the early wildflowers growing in an adjacent clearing. We I saw the scene I immediately liked the textures and the muted tones offset by a patch of green.

Background
Second California TrekEarth Summit held on the weekend of June 13, 2008, at Point Reyes National Seashore. Saturday morning’s sunrise was a bust with low fog along the coast and low clouds slightly inland so those of us at the meeting slept in. Later in the morning we headed out toward the point only to discover that the fog was hanging on and the light very dull so we diverted up the Mount Vision road, into the fog, to see what we could see and photograph. We found a forested mountain shrouded in fog, dripping with moisture, and abounding with photographic opportunities.

Hey John,
Been a while man, were you've been, on the road shooting millions of the greatest shots the world have ever seen? ;-)
Seems you have been to the meeting with Peter, hope you had a great time there and will show us some great landscapes in the weeks to come.
This detail shot is something i never see, walk by before noticing if there is anything growing on a tree. But i like to see it from others, makes me aware that i must look with a better eye than i have now ;-)
Regards, Henk

Hello John,
very well presented this simple but very effective compo, with great details and contrast; colours seem to be very natural and this is what I like best. I like this pic!
Thanks for sharing it.
Regards,

Igor

Hi John,
Good to see you back, that too with a wonderful shot. Like the sharpness and the brown tones here.
Good work,
Shaeri

John,
I won't ask where you've been - as I've just read your reply to Henk - and, you know, you won't have to remind me of the "little picture" too often - your wife and my partner both - and probably me too!

I always appreciate these little scenes - and those who post them add greatly to TE's overall texture in my opinion.

Regards
Colin

Hi John,

Very nice composition with all the colours complementing each other. The image is very sharp too. Excellent!

Graeme

I like the balance and detail of this unperturbed look at what's below. Well composed, good eye for the unique.
Regards,
Kathy

This is something unusual from you John. It took Joanne to spot it I see. :D You have captured the detail and texture extraordinarily well with a well chosen DOF to minimise the background distractions. I think the green leaves add to the success of the image because if it was all brown tones it would be a bit lifeless. Well spotted Joanne and well executed John.

Hi John,
I like the excellent detail captured here. As Kath notes the DOF is just right. It was great seeing you and Joanne again.

Hi John,

I been wondering where you'd gone mate. I love the woodland details just like you have offered us here. Intimate moment full of interesting texture and color. Really well composed too. Everything leads the eye right to where you want it with lodas of interest throughout.

Cheers!

John,
Glad you're back ! :o)
A very original compo, I like how you show a detail here, and how this detail is enough to get good information about the location of your picture.
Nice job,
Regards,
JB.

John,
I have a very similar image of the same detail. It seems to me that Joanne was so infective with her enthusiasm for it that I also got infected to have a shot. The balance of your DOF is perfect with the rigth amount of blurr in the background to still give some info of it.
That little hike in the dripping fog was a good exercise to draw our attention more to the details that make a landscape instead the comprehensive wide-angle approach of take it all.
Peter

Hello John. Very nice tall frame capture in stunning sharpness and detail. Right title justified by the capture. Well done and best regards. Jusni
