[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Sharp and Glazner [1] write the following about the geometry of Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley: “Dry loose sand can accumulate at a repose angle of about 34 degrees, but it prefers a slope closer to 33 degrees. Once deposited at 34 degrees, dry sand soon slumps, forming a lobe off flowing sand, called a sand avalanche, that comes to a rest at an angle of 30 to 33 degrees. Big sand avalanches generate a low-pitched moan that resembles the sound of the horn on a distant diesel locomotive.” This photograph was taken shortly after sunrise from the top of a neighboring dune using a telephoto lens. The creosote bush is there with its long shadow. Climbing the lee face of a dune is not an easy task because avalanche sand is loosely packed, and 33 degrees is always a steep climb no matter what.

Continuing with Sharp and Glazner [1], “The longitudinal crest of a transverse dune ridge is not always straight in the overhead view, but can curve and meander. The crest also commonly rises and falls gently between broad, rounded summits and wide-open saddle.”

[1] R. P. Sharp and A. F. Glazner, Geology Underfoot in Death Valley and Owens Valley, 1997.

Photo note: Early morning shot. Minor contrast and curves adjustment. No color manipulation.

Hi Hakan
Very beautiful photo with wonderful colours and forms
Well done
Greetings from Greece
Best regards
Nick

Hi Hakan,
Glad you bring up some Velvia's again, how i love that film. I still have my old EOS 1 here and every time i am thinking of buying a film and start shooting again. Mostly caused by nostalgic feelings. And now seeing this i also have that feeling again. The film is so unique, here on screen it doesn't show for the full 100%, but making an Ilfachrome print the quality must be awesome. Love the deep yellow/orange colour with strong contrasting shadow lines which make depth and bring out a beautiful composition...perfect work, i love it.
Have a nice Sunday, Henk

Hello Hakan
Very strong sand dune here from Death Valley, I didn't really go and explore these myself as I was duned out from New Mexico and Colorado. The strong orange and dark shadows compliment each other very well, very well done

Jim

Simple and yet superb. The contrast between the shaded side of the dune and the lighted one is astonishing. A great yellow ocre to brighten the view.

All the best,

Hello
Interesting place. Nice colours and contrast. Don`t you think that the bright part of dune is a bit overexposed/oversaturated, so the details dissapear?:)
Regards

Hi Hakan,
The yellow color of the sand washed with the colors of the sun, the contrast is absolutely beautiful.
Best regards. Salvator.

Hello Hakan
This image is an eye catcher with the strong light shade contrast, the warm color of the sand and the the curvy lines adding graphism. There is also a good sense of depth.

Merhaba Hakan,
What an amazinbg shot!! The demarkation between sunlight and shadow is so sharp that iw would look like a bull fighter's cape were it not for the fine detail of the sand waves along the lower edge. The note is also excellent.

I did a bit of climbing on the dunes at Pt Reyes last weekend and my legs are still sore, so I can imagine the effort this took.
HLJ, Pat

Hello Hakan,
I think you find the art out in the nature...the light and the shadows and the fine pattern on the sound!
Very poetic for a landscape...

Hello Hakan,
beautiful shot with the sand kissed by the warm light of the early morning making a strong impact in the compo. The game between light and shadows created a good depth and added a great mood to the shot which I really like. A flawless presentation indeed.
Thank you and regards,

Igor

Hello Hakan,

I have not been very active in TE lately, and missed this fabulous image you posted two weeks ago. Like so many of your shots from the American South West, there is a surrealistic atmosphere pervading this image. The light certainly, with the glow of the illuminated side and the deep shadows on the opposite side of the crest, presents a dramatic illusion. Your note is first rate as usual.

Warm regards,

Bulent

It seems such a simple composition, but I can appreciate the difficulty you went to and the result is stunning. The colour of the right side of the dune is startling, as is the sharp edge which belies the soft nature of the sand. It seems you took your life in your hands. Beautiful image.

merhaba hakan! :)

sorry, have been absent from the site for some time. i see, you have some nice additions to your gallery. so, let me start with this one. i find it quite amazing: the radiance of the sun on one side contrast by what appears to be almost balckness on the other (in the thumbnail i mistook this for a beach and the ocean). a beautiful shot!

regards,
kristaps

Hello Hakan,
A very very impressive shot indeed.. I'd have liked to be there on the top of the dune and wait until the shadows become what we expect. But I also know that it is not easy to climb up on these dunes, because you have to make tremendous efforts. So congrulaytions for the picture taken athe best hour and for your efforts -

Hi Hakan, A dramatic composition, showing light and colours are the key to many photographs which catch attention. The earthy tones make this an eternal sort of view. Interesting notes. TFS. Murray.

Hakan, this one is very well captured, the stark light dark line is fantastic and the color is so wonderfully hot. The best though is the subtle sky. Great capture.
