I am back and I just discovered this series. Really a fantastic place photographed by a real artist. This one is amazing especially by the compo with the grass on the FG.

Hello Peter,

An engaging note, accompanying a very good image of Painted Hills. By including two distinct peaks into the photo, you have achieved the balance of a pair of focal points, like those in an ellipse.

It's too bad you can't tell your right from your left because the photo is great. "Little" Steve sure seems to be on the right.

This is elegant. To describes the beauty of nature you meticulously used a nice soft colour tone. The patches of grass add the required contrast with the bare hills. Nice pleasant and cozy mood all around.

This is a fine composition. Great foreground interest and superb and unusual perspective for the Painted Hills.

Recently I was researching info about the John Day Fossil Beds and did not realize that it has a muchricher collection of fossils than I'd previously thought.

Hi Peter,
Those graases look great and add a new aspect to the Painted Hills series. Never been there but they look familiar from another place, Central Plateau in New Zealand. Next to volcanoes, I guess the soil was somewhat similar there. Like Pat described, unable to contain moisture and for that reason very arid.

Another excellent shot where you have gone out of your way to find foreground interest, and this time didn't need to use portrait format to fit it into the frame. Interesting how you see "fluffiness" in the background. I take it you mean the gradual toning of the wonderful "Painting" on the hills. Good work

Hi Peter,
A lot of things going on here which makes it almost a study. The grass int he foreground looks very interesting and gives a good foreground detail. Steve in the frame is nice, but not important for me for scaling, while others maybe love to see this. But it are the two big nipples who ateal the show in all their beauty. the look rather soft, but that suits the image well in combination with that slight purple toning in the sky. Using a 0.3 means light in the sky was not at his best i think, but seeing this result i only can say it's good work in composition, exposure and presentation...

Olá Peter,

é uma composição que aproveita bem as três camadas de elementos, como esses arbustos, a interessante formação rochosa como o tema da foto e ainda um pedaço de horizonte irregular que funciona como o buraco da fechadura para termos uma idéia geral do lugar em si. Bla, bla, bla, bli, bli, bli, é uma linda foto ponto!

juhu, ein weiteres Bild von den painted hills! Einfach unglaublich, ich meine wie kann so etwas in der Natur entstehen? Schön eingefangen von dir, tolle Tiefe, der Vordergrund ist perfekt und die Atmosphäre wirklich schön.
Ich bin immer wieder hin und weg wenn ich Fotos von diesem Ort sehen, weil es für mich so unecht aussieht, ein wahres Wunder der Natur!
Klasse Farben und ein klasse Blickwinkel runden dieses wunderschöne Foto ab, super!

Hi Peter,
The tussocks of grass work very well as a foreground subject here, their fluffiness the perfect contrast to the soft velvety texture of the hills. Everything is very delicate and understated – the gentle light on the grass, the soft palette of rusty red and yellow earth tones on the hills, the pale blue of they sky – creating a beautiful early morning atmosphere.
I didn’t see the human figure at first, but interestingly it actually made no difference to my sensation of scale, which I think is provided very well by the grass tussocks.
Very nice continuation of the series.

Peter, this is a really fine shot with great detail. I think you accomplished your aim with the tufts of grass. I think the bg is a bit washed out but that could be a finction of the small post size. Overall really a fine capture.

ahhh, now i see what that fluffy talk was all about. good, good. i agree with the concept (even though we both know that grass is not that fluffy in close contact after all...). excellent low POV. that reminder about steve's figure was very useful to comprehend the scale. one thing i don't understand though, pete... i look at the picture, i look at the data... what happened to your polarizer??? ;)) wonderful shot!

At first sight looked to me like another over contrasted scene, but obviously it's not the case. Are those hills really like that? amazing !
Wonderfull colour pattern, and smart composition, all elements pointing from bottom right to upper left.
Fortunatelly small Steve was there to scale the landscape ;)
It's a shame the sky didn't contributed with the photographer.

Funny that at the moment I was opening this picture, I received a phone call from LA and a relative is inviting us ( my wife ) for a week or more in California. Since I am not the style of guy who likes to stay at home more than one one day fo(For courtesy)your pictures of the painted desert and perhaps the Antilope Canyon, and Death Valley or Mono lake, may be
arranged in a tour. I will count on your
suggestions very much dear Peter.
What a good idea to include the grass at the front. The combination is just marvellous.
And the ND filter has done is even more striking.

I like the fact that the fluffy croppings lean toward the beautifully painted mound in the distance. Tho' easily dismissed by one less experienced than you, these grassy clumps add color and texture to the landscape you present. Great addition to your gallery.

Landscape photography of the highest quality, of course the extraordinary beauty of this place helped a lot, but I don't think that there are many of us that could capture it this way! Hi, Peter -

I don't know about background fluffiness; in fact, I rather like the contrast between the fluffy foreground and what I see as hard background.

What I also find fascinating is that the plants are bending in the wind - creating a nice diagonal - and yet they almost all look crisp, even at 1/6 second. That was well done! Good diagonal contrast in the hills, too.

I might have painted the white part of the sky a bit, to lower the contrast there, but that is a minor nit.

belle photo de cette vue sur ces colinnes superbe et ces touffes d' herbes a l' avant donne un bel effet a votre prise.

I'm not sure about "fluffy" but there is a definite softness to this scene. The hills look like blobs of coffee-flavored mousse. The foreground grass tufts, shot in nice light, certainly appear delicate, too. I hope to check out the Painted Hills someday. A bit far for a TE meeting, though!

I Peter.
It took me a long time before coming down to write something, completely riveted to the image.
The harshness of the place softened by the fluffy grasses is well thought. A bit of life in a desert like environement.
Stunning place and stunning photo.
Surprised to see a 3-stop ND grad use here, the sky must have been quite bright when compare to the ground.Good use and result.
