[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
From a recent trip to northern New England. This photo was taken at Nubble Light near sunset. Although, the weather was very mixed, the light was pretty decent.
I manually adjusted the while balance here and set my white point off the lighthouse and let the rest fall into place. I also left the telephone poles in this shot to suggest just a hint of modern times.

Cape Neddick Lighthouse, Maine's southernmost lighthouse, is also called Nubble Light because it sits on a barren rocky island (the Nubble) just off shore in York, Maine. It was built in 1870. The tower is 41-feet high, rises 88 feet above the high water mark, and 13 feet in diamater. The keeper's house is a two stories and is connected to the tower by a covered walkway.

The Keepers of the lighthouse used a trolley system to transport groceries and other supplies from the mainland. A wooden box suspended on a cable runs between the Nubble and the mainland. You can see the trolley system from shore.

Although you can see Nubble Light from a number of spots along the coast in York, the best up-close view is from Sohier Park. This beautiful spot 200 yards from the Nubble offers an unobstructed view with perfect photo opportunities. You can sit on a bench and watch the ocean surge around the rocky headlands, climb over the rocks along shore, or browse in the gift shop. What you CAN'T do is actually go onto the island the lighthouse sits on.

Twice a year the Nubble is adorned with white lights, outlining the houses and tower: for "Christmas in July," which is the beginning of York Days Celebration, and the first Saturday after Thanksgiving, for the Annual Lighting of the Nubble. Both events are held at Sohier Park.

Excellent Shot. I love the rocky foreground. The bright colors of the house and grass really dress up the photo. Good P.O.V.

Craig

I glimpsed at the thumbnail and knew it was Maine. You captured the essence of it.

Michael,
What an excellent image of the lighthouse. Can’t really say why but I love lighthouse photo. This is really nice with good composition of the rock formation leading the viewers into the bay or river and then the distant lighthouse. Good DOF, great sharpness overall, especially on the foreground of the rocks. Good balanced of colors and light with right amount of saturation and contrast. I enjoyed your impressive gallery. Thanks.

Hi Mike,
I've seen many photos of this lighthouse but I must say this one has the most interesting POV from the well detailed rocks across the inlet to the lovely little house. Excellent colors with wonderful sharp details. The silver blue sky makes for a perfect backdrop to set off the details of the lighthouse.
I'm on my way tomorrow for a week on Vinalhaven Island and it is suppose to rain every day and not get above 50 degrees.
Regards, Tom

Hi Michael
I like the way you kept all the nice detail in the FG rocks and I especially like the little red hut against the greenery.
Very well done.
Phil

beautiful, ur notes is very clearly. View, the Rock element is a guide to walk to nice building..

Wow! Another terrific lighthouse shot. The foreground rocks and ocean really make this composition special.

Michael, fine view of the light. I see you had a nice low tide when you shot this. Your colors are very good and the WB shift worked well. You pov is nice, I like the fg rocks, and I absolutely agree about leaving the poles in the frame. That the light was showing red and not just blank is also a good touch. Great capture.

Greg

Salut.
On dirait un phare dans un conte pour enfant..
Il est parfait..Une superbe lumière qui renvoie les couleurs vives du phare..
Bravo
Cyril

Hello Michael,
Very effective composition with the two parts nicely balanced. I particularly like the textures and colours of the foreground rocks and the saturated colours around the lighthouse. Good DOF to maintain sharpness throughout the scene.
John

This is a perfect vantage point for this quintessential shot of the Nubble. The foreground rocks with their leading lines and the gas bubble depressions make this a winner! Excellent results and helpful notes, Mike.
Regards,
Kathy

Hi Michael:

This is a fabulous shot! What a fantastic wide-angle feel it has, and the sharpness is exquisite. I guess that's the joy of an L lens. I love the inclusion of all those rocks. Great job.
