The Fisher King
Fisher Towers, Moab, Utah, USA

This was taken on a walk around the base of these magnificent towers east of Moab. The spectacular and, at times, spectacularly thin formations rise up to 900ft right in front of you.

I've put this one into B&W, the formations seem to stand out a little better this way, rather than in their native brown.

Hi Colin,

A majestic shot, the bl/w works great, but I'd be curious to see the colour version too. Any chance of uploading it as a WS? Great title!Cheers.

Benny

Hi olin,

I'm not a big fan of B&W but every once in awhile an image like this turns my head. I can feel every bit of those dizzying heights. The rocky forms and the clouds all look wonderful in B&W. I'm trying to imagine the color version and I just think this probably conveys more emotion. Love the foreground gnarled Juniper(?).

Cheers!

Bob G.

Bonjour Colin,
beaucoup de doigté et du talent à maitriser les compositions en b&w. Pas d'exagération dans les contrastes et uen contre plongée qui donne pas al de panache à ce sommet.
Best regards.
Daniel.

Hello Colin, your POV is perfect for this subject. The towers look quite fragile, [I am sure that they probably are not!].
There is a lot of texture which is more obvious in b&w I feel, a good idea to post in b&w.
Tfs, regards Jean.

Hi Colin - this is beautiful. Honestly, it has a real Ansel feel to it. For me the choice of b&w is superior to the colour. You are able to focus on the lines and curves this way. You've captured lovely clouds as well. I like your comp as there are so many focal points. I've been learning about the "golden spiral" in photography and here I think you've got it. Very well done. Rgds, Leilani

This strange sepia tone you have been using in your past few shots really looks good with this landscape. The contrasts are very nice throughout the photo. The composition is very well chosen with the dead tree in the bottom right and the tower reaching into the cloudy sky in the top left. Reminds me of lord of the rings for some reason. Great work.

Ryan

Hi Colin,
a quite surreal landscape.. great how the towers rise into the sky like thin brush strokes.
B&W is a good chioce, also sharpness is perfect.
Good one !
Cheers Chris

Hi Colin

unfortunately for us, we never got to see "Fisher Towers", weather deteriorated when we got to Moab, but its on the list for our next trip.

I have seen many photos of these rocks which glow red when they're lit up for sunset, so seeing a close up in B&W was quite suprisng, but i have to say, it works perfectly well. Lovely composition too

Regards
Derek

Colin, I am not a fan of B&W as I continually say (but I still critique them...) but even i B&W this one shows the magesty and magic of the rock. Fine capture.

hello, colin

wow, this is quite a sight... the formation looks like an elaborate work of a sculptur tying hundreds of human-like bodies together in some mystical dance... a king indeed! a king among rocks! and your capture is fantastic. the brownish rendering gives it 'old movie' feel. i am almost afraid the old good russian zmey gorinich will fly out from behind those rocks, lol.

great one, friend!

cheers,
kristaps

Hello Colin,
I find this a very compelling image. The warmish B&W and low viewpoint gives it a kind of epic, almost sci-fi feel, as though these were ruins from some ancient civilisation of giants. The vertical framing draws the eye up through the picture and enhances the sense of scale. The glowering sky is the finishing touch, accentuating the feeling of otherworldliness.
Fine work.
John

hello Colin,
you know what this reminds me of? the toy castles kids build on beaches from the whet sand droplets piling in a heap, I quite like the idea that some gian deity has been playing here and has left the castle behind :) really smart use of B&W to emphasise textures and patterns, and I like a lot the upward facing point of view, I find it works well to emphasise the majesty of this place. excellent work, my compliments.

with best regards,
Kristine

Hi Colin:

Very cool shot. Black and white gives it a lovely brooding feel, especially from this vantage point. My only complaint is the frame--the combination of no frame on top and a crop that is fairly close to the top of the towers makes this presentation seem like it's cut off at the top. An easily solved problem. Otherwise, love it.

Clark

Hello Colin, I have had a quick look at your gallery and I like it a lot, also your introduction...I love rocks and stones...and alike. Leaving now for a couple of days but will take more time to go through it soon. This one is most beautiful, with a daring choice of a very special sepia tone that makes it dramatic, oniric, and mysterious. Lots of mood comes out of it and I feel very strongly. Very very good work.

TFS
Kind regards
Michèle

Colin,
this is fantastic! The inclusion of the little shrub in the right foreground is just perfect and gives a little bit the impression of scale even if it is a false one having in mind the size of 900ft.
The sky might be lack of contrast. Preferentelly I would prefer something almost in the black range as so typical for Ansel Adams.
