[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
It has been eight years since the Denver Metro Convention and Visitors Bureau hired me to take photos of the annual March Denver Pow Wow. Much has changed with photography since then. Digital photography was still in its infancy and I was quite confident of my abilities with shooting transparency film and with my expertise with using fill-flash. An older gentleman showed me his photos that he took with his digicam and I was interested in this "novelty", but I was quite confident that digital would never match the quality of film. This isn't the first time that I have been so wrong and I am sure that it won't be the last time. The joke was sure on me and I didn't even know it at the time.

One thing I am certain of now. I much prefer shooting digital for this type of indoor event, especially with my two Nikon D300 cameras (I charged these cameras and will have them paid off in 2030). I still prefer using fill-flash, but the Pow Wow officials wouldn't let me use flash. Not using fill-flash would have been a disaster using transparency film indoors, but it is only a minor inconveniece with the modern DSLRs. This young man is passionately dancing to the beat of the drums wearing his traditional Native American clothing. I set the iso at 800, which is a piece of cake for the fabulous Nikon D300 camera body. I used aperture priority (F/2.8) and set the exposure compensation to -1/3). I also could have increased the sharpening of this photo by a small amount, but I don't like over-sharpened images. This image has very little PS manipulation. Just levels, curves, and other basic adjustments.

I can appreciate this picture very much as I have also taken pictures at pow wows and realize it is NOT easy!! These dancers move so quickly!! You captured this perfectly!! Excellent colors, detail, and framing. TFS

Hello Stan,

Very good view. I like this one with the movement of the dancer frozen although he was not in an equilibrated state. It put a real idea of movement on this photo.
I am still impressed by the traditional clothing: there are so details and colors on them. And we can guess that everything has a meaning.
For a 800iso, the result is nice and with few noise (at least on what we can see on this small picture).

As you, I was very surprised by the speed of improvement for digital photo. I was not thinking it should have been so fast.
I must admit, I would never go back to slide films. There are too much possibility in digital we had not in films.

Yves.

Hello Stan, good morning! I can feel the dance and I guess this is what makes this picture so special for me. He seems to be in his own world, completely absorbed in his dance, the outer world almost forgotten. Same as Karen, I can appreciate your photos even more when I see what came out in Vermont :) I mean not bad but you know nothing to publish really. Have a wonderful weekend, Barbara.

Hi Stan,
Seems you have tons of images from this festival. Here the pose is excellent. Instead of a more static picture it gives a kind of motion in it which i very much like to see. Seems you were standing far away, because there is still detail in the background despite the 2.8. Nevertheless it's that pose what does it for me, i like it.
Have a nice weekend, Henk

Stan hermosa fotografia, has logrado captar el momento del bailarin, me gusta mucho el colorido y el contraste de la toma
felicitaciones

Hi Stan, Another stunning photo of the traditional costumes of the American Indian, your shallow DOF really highlight the detail & amount of work it must of taken to put such a stunning outfit together, wonderful colour & light &, nice timing with him in mid dance, kind regards Wilson.

Hi Stan,
Great composition taken under such difficult conditions. The dancer is seen frozen in beautiful motion as his itricatelly beautiful costume is seen flapping to the drum beat. The colors are rich and clear with pin sharp details to this wonderful festive scene.
Regards, Tom

Stan,
So solorful clothes !
You caught a great attitude from this man, with great compo.

JB.

Hi Stan,
first of all allow me to repeat myself : your notes are superior, both from a cultural as well as from a technical point of view.
Technically speaking your action shots are flawless, that's the way I see it, period.
I'm not an expert on the subject, most certainly not under this type of indoor circumstances, but I more than like what I see.
Brilliant... sparkling... sizzling... The only thing missing is... a soundtrack!
Top Notch!
You have a great sunday, Stannie.
Thanks for sharing!

Fulvio.

It's wonderful how you caught the dancer in this pose, and thanks to your confidence in the high ISO you were able to freeze the action perfectly. The colours are so vibrant, it must have been a pleasure to watch this live. Good work

Hello, Stan

Nice, dynamic capture. I love the pose of the dancer frozen in your shot. Color sare sparking vibrant as expected from your festive shots. A joyful cultural image indeed. On a side note, i have a slight nagging feeling the photo is cropped too tight on the left side.

Warm regards and TFS

hello Stan,
this is one impressive shot! I like a lot the vibrant colours and the expressive pose of the dancer, he seems completely oblivious to his surroundings and totally immersed in the dance.
impressive results for ISO 800, but I'm already used to Kristap's casual suggestion to "just increase the ISO" - it's not the same for us, D200s :) althought it would be a sin to complain about my camera, it's so smart I think I can let it go for a walk just by itself and then just look at the results :)

with kind regards,
Kristine

p.s. what's your opinion about your Sigma lens? would you recommend it?

Dear Stan, the emotion you are capturing in these dancers is giving me a better view than I would have had I tbeen visiting for the Pow-wow. Just a wonderful series. I do appreciate the detailed info you give on making the shot as well.

Hi Stan, another colorful one, with good quality and excellent timing to frozen the dancer.
wonderful tones too.
thanks, ciao

Hey, Stan,
I am back from home after the 9 hour trip from hell on my way back from West Virginia with two small boys and a 5 month old. Gin and tonic, you say?? LOL Great shot. The color and detail are phenomenal. I love the curve of the body and the way you stopped the action in mid step. That D300 is something. I am eyeing that one, myself. Well done!! Thanks and take good care,
Shelly

Dear Stan,

Beautifull.
Very rhythmic nature of the character and the colourfull costumes marks the nature of them..
EXCELLENT.

Hello Stan -

I guess we all thought the same thing as I still have two bricks of Velvia in the freezer and an F-100 collecting dust. Without fill flash it looks like you had decent lighting - where was the Pow Wow held, Stock Show or Merchandise Mart? This guy is really painted up and into the dance and the colorful costume sure jumps off the screen. You have captured the stop action perfectly with excellent detail and sharpness. I see little noise - did you do any noise reduction? I have shot my D300 at ISO 800 during a sunset shoot at the Bosque and I did notice a lot of noise. Anyway, well done!

Thank you for sharing.

John
