[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
You can interpret the title of this post at least in two ways. First and probably more appropriate would be the terrible sub-prime mortgage crisis that is taking the whole American economy down in a non ending domino effect. In the meantime I see everywhere empty houses, for sale and no one buying them despite the prices being attractively low. Second, is a little bit more farfetched but more corresponding to my traditional landscape photography, which I put to sleep for the last 3 months. I experimented during this time a little bit around and my recent trip to Istanbul helped a lot in this respect. It gave me some confidence that I can do also some other types of photography, at least pretend.

I live in California now for 6 years. Prior to that I lived in Switzerland, yet I’m still familiarizing myself with the nature, landscape, history, weather, etc of this fairly new State of California. California was the last major frontier in the conquest of the Wild West. The gold rush in 1849 made things move pretty fast and it attracted people from every corner of this world. California as it is known nowadays is only 159 years old - or shall I say 159 year young? In this short period it turned into the most populous State of the U.S. with more than 30 million people and has an economy that is as strong as the 5th wealthiest country in the world.

Pioneers started from scratch and it was a very hard living or easy dying. Many things failed and some got right. A city like Bodie, once 2nd largest city in California, is nowadays a ghost city! Signs of these well intended attempts can be seen everywhere all over California and my present post is such an example. Staircase and fireplace of a former wooden house are left and nature takes its part back. Empty and open house!

P.S. I will be going to the Death Valley and meet some TE friends there over the weekend. I will be back in 1 week, hopefully with many new nature and landscape photographs.

Hi Peter,
This is a great image with potential for many interpretations, in several scopes... incredible!
The quality of the image is excellent, as usual in your gallery. I like the pattern of the clouds and the lighting on the house ;-)
Thanks for sharing,
MCV

Hi Peter,
Beautiful clear & colourful picture, very well captured & presented. Your note is interesting and informative. The chimney always appears to be the last thing standing.
Nice shot.
Regards
Santo

Peter

Nicole

Hello Peter,

It look like the housing crisis in the USA will be there for a while yet but hopefully things will turn around sooner than expected. The image is pretty, with the old fireplace giving the scene a sense of desolation. The colours look nice and details enhance the quality of the shot. Have fun in Death Valley. Cheers :-)

Hi Peter,
Beautiful colours and excellent contrasts. You know, for sure, how to get the best out of the D200. Your title and your note are interesting.
Cheers
Marc

These are not the kind of ruins we are used to seeing in the US. More like somewhere in Europe. You composed it well as the ruins stairs seem to lead us in very well. I like the late(?) light too; very gentle. You were able to top it all off with a lovely sky. Well done and enjoy Death Valley. (You must have met more TE people than anyone else! ;D)

Great shot Peter, and a good reminder of the difficulty of settling the American west. There are many ghost towns and abandoned buildings to be found, and whenever I see one It's always a poignant moment. Good work at capturing that feeling. Well done!

Hi Peter,

I deleted my earlier comment, since it got misinterpreted.
Nice photograph.

Hi Peter,
good to see another beautiful landcape from you. The sky so amazingly beautiful beside the good compo make this shot beautiful to look at..the whole lot is enhanced by the good choice of the vertical format. Excellent quality as always!
Have a nice trip.

Igor

Hi, Peter -

C'mon, the housing crisis isn't that bad! Yet.

Great shot of ruined house and landscape. I didn't know Fresno could look like that. :-)

One historical note: California actually got ahead of the rest of the "wild west" because of the gold rush. The area between California and the Great Plains was settled later, and more slowly; it wasn't until 1890 or so that the frontier was considered "closed." And for 50 years, San Francisco was just about the only city west of Denver - and we made the most of it!

By the way, I tried to go to Bodie the other week, when I went to Mono Lake, but the roads are closed now except to snow vehicles. I may try again sometime in the summer; I haven't been there since 1994 and it's time to go back.

Best,
Dan

Hi Peter,
An image that brings many wonderings to mind about the history of this place. Your capture is excellent with perfect composition of the photographic elements and very well guided light and colors. Well done and TFS. Gerald

Fresno never looked better! :)

Excellent shot Peter. I heard the sub prime problem was bad but not this bad. The light here is subtle and highlights the detail in the old fireplace.

Zeca

Hi Peter!

Amazing "blending" of nature and architecture photography, excellent framing and composition! Beautiful "deep" colours, excellent sharpness and contrast and a breathtaking sky! Congratulations!

Olá Peter,
The compo is remarkably accomplished, with the fg stairs and wall making a lead in to the ruins of the fireplace. The fabulous light and the way you treated it, along with the dramatic sky makes it look like an ancient shrine. Beautiful and very evocative!
Um abraço, José.

Hi Peter,
That is a very moving photo and note. The line between the steps and the fireplace works well and catching the California hills in their 15 minutes of green under that stunning sky is very attractive.

I look forward to your Deat Valley shots.
HLJ, Pat

Hi Peter. We have many isolated fireplaces around NZ if you look hard enough but not too many a grandiose as this sample. I think what often happened was the house burned to the ground leaving only the brick fireplace standing. I made a point of photographing the ones I saw but gave up when I found there were too many and too common. Nice capture though I’m a little lost as to why you didn’t include the whole staircase. I love the sky, great texture. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers, Paul.

Ola Peter,

Perfeicao.

Abracos,

Flavia

Hello Peter,

I think that Switserland more beautiful than California, this must are a very great transition between this two countries.
But after seven year shall America become an second fatherland.
light and colours are very well, also it vertical frame.
Nice composition, thanks for sharing.

Hi Peter,
You've got a wonderful light here. You made that humble ruins look beautiful.
~~~
In fact, California is such a young country (not mentioning the Native American cultures).
When I first visited Old Town San Diego, I was kind of disappointed; it looked rather a group of battered houses instead of really old (I had European standards in my mind).
F
hello Peter,
having lived in Switzerland for four years and then coming to NYC I can only agree about two places being completely different, it has taken me more than a year to really start feeling "at home" in New York. moving often means that I get to experience this "empty house" phenomenon, when the only things in the apartment are the fridge in the kitchen and mattress on the floor :)
I like a lot how the stairs lead the eye towards the remains of the fireplace in this shot, I find it almost symbolic that these are the only things that remain from the house. beautiful luch green, but I particularly like the sky, it feels very fresh, light and high.
with kind regards,
Kristine
Dear Peter,
I like it all, the title, and the photography and the note. Beautiful view of these fields and abandoned house/ruins, sky with a touch of melancholy...it renders very well the feeling of abandonment. Great shades of green and great quality as we are used from you...
And yes that crisis is terrible. I have a friend in Oregon, working in the "moving" business, he now has only enough work for 1 day a week.
Then I want to say that I am absolutely confident that you can do other sorts of photography if that is what you want. Going to different places as the usual helps, and you've got all the technical knowledge, so ! Looking forward to your next ones with interest, of whichever style they may be :-)!
Kind regards and TFS
Michèle
P.S. Me for one, I do not manage to get sharpness all over the image in a case like this where there is something between the horizon and me, even at 11 or 13. Do you have to aim closer to oneself or further actually ? What a basic question hmmm, well so it is. Thanks.
Simple yet delightful, the location is a surprise, this looks like a roman ruin from a mediterranean country and not Fresno, the fast food capital of the world :-)
You have terrific light here with 3D effect on the ruins and grasses. Nicely composed as always, Peter.
Kathy
Hi Peter
Good composition and a very nice POV. Like those color and cloud over the sky. The green vegetation and ruined stone structure really opened the picture.
Lopshang.
Hi Peter,
Wonderful vertical presentation of these old ruins surrounded by the lush green grass and lovely wild flowers. The rolling hills leading to the silver blue sky and wispy clouds adds nice depth to this eye pleasing view.
Back east there are many such ruins from the iron smelting towns that used charcoal from the hardwood trees to smelt the ore before they were made redundant by the oxygen furnace.
California being the oldest western state (the bay are in particular) looks much like cities back east with the prevalent Victorian style architecture.
Hi Peter,
My eye follows the different elements at each stage in the shot which create wonderful depth, starting with the staircase, followed by the fireplace and fence beyond that and finially the hills and streaked sky. Perfect sharpness, and I really like the feeling of solitude and abandonment.
Wanda
Hello Peter -
I think Joanne and I drove by this site out near Millerton. It was midday so the light was terrible so we just drove on. Getting on site either early or late in the day is really the best time to capture the landscape. Sometimes it seem counterintuitive, but that's the way it works. You polarizer helped this scene by enriching the sky and the grasses. Well done!
Thank you for sharing.
John
