I just returned from a long trip in Alaska. I took a few nice shots that I will try to share once I process everything. For now, here's an image of the Northern Lights that I took from the Arctic Circle. By Alaska standards, this greenish display is so-so. Many displays have red, purple, pink and other colors. I saw some of that but wasn't able to photograph during those times. For this shot it was about minus 30 degrees F, and operating the camera was very, very difficult. The wind was howling, too, and some of my other shots have camera shake. For this one I popped a hand-held flash three times at 2/3 output to illuminate the trees and little outhouse (yes...a loo). Exposure was 30 sec. Any longer and the stars show trails. The experience motivated me to try again.

It's a beautiful picture. Never saw Green light in the sky. What is it, is it sun light getting reflected or what?

Magnifique photo d'aurore boréale avec ce très judicieux coup de flash qui permet de déboucher le premier plan. Fantastique travail!

Very nice, Ted...interesting band there at the sky. Despite the extreme conditions, your shot is still acceptably very sharp. Thanks for sharing the technique. Alex

la capture des aurores boréales n'est pas facile, même si le phénomène se présente souvent, il faut encore que le ciel soit au mieux.
Bel balance des blancs et belles lumières au sol, tout en conservant une exposition parfaites du ciel.

Wow, a loo with a view... ;o)
Great shot, amazing colours (by non-Alaska standards). I guess if the outhouse wasn't there, it would look like something from another world.
Thanks for sharing!

A stupendous effort which has paid off well.
Very lovely one, almost dreamy for dry lander like me.
I am thrilled.

You lucky lucky man! I am sooo jealous of both your witnessing this amazing phenomenon and taking its photo...and a very good photo indeed. Compo is great. I hope I can have the chance to see aurora borealis before I die. The loo looks unreal due to the flash, but I like the effect. When you try again, try with longer exposure. I think trails might look nice with the aurora. Very well handled image, congrats. I wish you a red aurora next time. You know it is rare.

This is a great shot! You managed to capture the northern lights beautifully. Your composition is fine showing the outhouse in the foreground with the tress framing it and the lights forming a great backdrop. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness.
