Photographer’s Note
This shot was taken overlooking the infamous Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach, Oregon (center of image) from the Ecola State Park. This was our first time to this location and were blown away buy the amazing scenery and ocean views. Low lying fog and mist rising from the ocean and the tall wind-blown tree provided nice contrasts and good depth.

Hi Gerald!
This is quite the scene, with the wind wipping up the shoreline, and the morning fog hanging in the low spots. The suttle coloring works well here for a change! Certainly the drama of the tree, and then the concecutive ridges is a great composition. Nice work, cheers,
Steve

I like this almost B^W picture in which everything is in the right place. The composition is very accurate, and the light is perfect. The effect of the mist, so typical of this area, is the perfect touch.

Bonjour Gerald,
cette ambiance coupe le soufle.
On y sent des conditions qui semeblent difficiles, ou alors, ce sont les lumières qui donnent cette impression.
Une terre bien sauvage en apparence.
Excellent cadrage mais aussi encadrement.
Have a great week-end.

Hello Gerald, I like the layers captured here. It could almost be a black and white shot, but we can still see tinges of blue and it is this that makes the shot quite special.
I like the fog which adds to the composition, and the silhouetted tree completes the scene.
Tfs, regards Jean.

I was born and raised in Oregon. I participate in local and many international photography web sites. I've seen a lot of pictures taken from this very spot. I have photography friends that live in Cannon Beach, Oregon who take pictures of Haystack Rock on a regular basis.
This much I know... I never get tired of seeing this and other views of Haystack Rock. There is something mesmerizing about it that never grows old.
Btw, you may not know this but within the last week or so TWO of three canons from the 1846 warship the USS Shark, for which Cannon Beach is named, washed up on the beach within 100 yards where the first cannon from it washed up on shore way back in 1898.
That is near where you took this photo and a pretty cool bit of Northwest history!

Hi Gerald,
The foggy mist really gives this landscape a mysterious romantic feel. There are many layers to the rocks and hills as they lead to the lovely muted silver blue sky. The foreground tree adds nice scale and definition to this outstanding image.

Thanks to Peter Boehringer I recognised the shape of the Haystack before reading your note. I love these kind of images with this gorgeous misty light. There is a wonderful pinky cast which just takes away the monochrome look to the scene. The whole atmosphere is mesmerising with the mist between the several layers of mountains. I think having the rocks and tree in silhouette enhance the mood of the image. It's going into my favourites.

IL se dégage une atmosphère de ta photo, surtout avec cet arbre torturé par les éléments de la nature, il me fait penser aux arbres que l'on rencontre dans nos fagnes.

Hi, Gerald. This is a stunning view. The depth is really extraordinary here with the rocks first and then all the succession of ridges coming down towards the ocean. The tree on the left balances the composition very well.

Hello Gerald,
A picture that will create a lot of jealous, because of its quality and of course because few people can afford to visit Cannon Beach. But after ill this the beauty of TE isn't, the same values are evident for all countries.
By the way I wish I could hang this landscape on my wall -

Hi Gerald: Stunning shot. Great composition and many nuances of shades of somber colour (its not quite a black & white). One suggestion if you are into a lot of Photoshop work and that is to lighten (dodge tool) the very black rocks so that one can see some texture in them. This relieves them from being dense black blobs.
All the best,
John
