Snow Canyon

Water is a precious commodity in southern Utah. Many areas receive less than 6 inches of rain a year. What little precipitation does fall quickly runs off the rock faces, sculpting the sandstone into the bizarre shapes the area is known for.

Some areas are known for water pockets, depressions in the sandstone that collect water after a rain. These water pockets can be short lived as the water quickly evaporates. During these short lived days, however, there can be quite a bit of activity going on. Some hold shrimp that hatch and lay eggs, all in the span of a couple of days. Others that hold water for longer periods, have toads that call the pockets home. All attract birds and other animals looking for a drink.

This water pocket is one of the larger in Snow Canyon. After a rain you can bet there will be water here. Still it is dry for most of the year. Even rarer is to see ice on the water, which had happened this morning. The oak bushes seen in the water, are common in the area, sprouting up wherever a little water collects.

This is a 2x6 stitch.

Wow, this is a wonderful shot! That little bit of snow on the tops of the hills really adds another element to this, and helps to give some defintion to the hills, making the features stand out better. The contrast between the blue sky and the red rocks is great too. Well done!

Very interesting photo, tis stitched photo looks like taken with "fisheye", very sharp and colorful photo

Greetings
DzULA

Nice panorama and without the stitch the viewer would not have a good sense for the expanse of land and sky in this part of the world.

It should be mentioned that in the heat of desert summer the water in these places is warm to hot by mid-afternoon, tastes metallic and you run a high risk of getting Giardiasis but water pockets are essential to survival if you are unprepared, desperate and lost for more than more than a day or so.

Hello Allan,a fantastic panoramic shot of the Snow Canyon. The strata of the rocks and mountains is clearly visible, it really adds to the shot.
Colourful scene.Your stitching is excellent.
Notes are informative.
Tfs, regards Jean.

This photo is very sharp and crisp. I like how it shows all of the elements, nice shot. The lines in the canyon are very defined, good job.
