Photographer's Note
I drove up Mt. Washburn early in the morning looking for grizzlies. This is what I saw when drove around one of the bends of the road. It was Goldilocks and the Three Bears.
The rest of the story: This mother grizzly actually had two more cubs with her. They were just out of frame to the left. It is extremely rare for a grizzly to have four cubs and people were very excited when they first saw her and the four cubs. Two of the cubs were slightly bigger than the other two however and many people believe that she actually adopted two of the cubs, which is also extremely rare. A few days later we witnessed her nursing all four of the cubs.
In the workshop here I posted a photo of another mother grizzly with two cubs photographed two months earlier in the same location.

Hi Ryan,
Your capture is like from NatGeo. The story in your note is very interesting and show how clever they are. Your DOF and capturing this decisive moment excellent, especially I like your untouched natural colors and lights, wonderful. Congratulations.

I really like the photo of the photographers and the bears too, of course. It is funny to see a bear looking left... and right (?) before crossing the road!!! Or, was she looking at the woman and thinking how to keep the cubs safe? It is a very good picture, as usual. OBRIGADO.

hat off to you, Ryan, in such a situation you managed to create not simply a decent shot, but a great one - love how the gentle curve of the road marking leads the eye towards Goldilocks [the title could not be better, by the way :)], the bears are perfectly in focus and her paw in mid-step adds nice feeling of movement. also, I like how the bear seems as fascinated with the people as they are with her.
really great shot, my compliments.

Kristine

This is most adorable, highly proffesional job, Ryan.
The photo is a technical marvel (regardles of two missing cubs ! (:-)))))
The moment, the POV - nothing short of perfection !
(thanks Almighty - you haven't practise Polonaise's "How close can you get' in there - that time...)
Your photo - my smiling face in front of the monitor - joy of watching something so charming...
Hats off, brother...
Have a most wonderful WE

Great shot here Ryan, a lovely close-up of these grizzlies. I've never been lucky enough to see a grizzly in the wild (have seen some black bears before) but the cubs are very cute. The inclusion of the Jeep, and the woman in the pink really help make this photo stand out.

David

Great shot. Since you had to have the road in it, turning it into a photojournalism image with the woman and her car was a good idea, rather than trying to disguise it as a nature shot. Very uncommon in these parts to see a grizzly this close. I have some shots on TNature of a pair, but they are semi-enclosed and easier to get at than most.

Hi Ryan:
I laughed out loud when I saw your title--seems like this shot was just made for that title. :) Fabulous composition, with the road leading your eye from the bears (the obvious subject) to Goldilocks, who seems to be practicing George's "how close can you get" technique. Insane, some of the tourists at Yellowstone. Anyway, fantastic shot all around.

Wonderful capture, Ryan.
Great crop too, closing in on the action. You even have the perfect balance of the bears in one corner and the photographer in the opposite. The curve of the road is also pleasing. I presume she got much the same shot with you in it.

Hi Ryan, your timing for this shot, with the bears and Goldilocks is really amazing. And was there a mirror image with you hanging out of your car window in a similar manner to Goldilocks. She might have a great shot of you too, haha. Your detail is good, with great depth of field to tie in the bears and the girl, but it is really your timing that makes this one great. I liked your workshop shot too. Very natural looking.
Thanks, John

Great shot and story. Perfectly framed with the car and the girl in the background, without it would be just another bear snapshot. Love it.

Hi Ryan,
Very clever to put a piece of the car in with the photographer, gives it human touch to it how close these animals have become in our world. I only have seen once a bear in Canada, but hope this year to see more in some northern states and Canada...thanks for sharing this one, i like it a lot.

Capturing the grizzly with cubs is very, very fine but I like how you've incorporated what normally would be considered a terrible distraction - another photographer leaning out a car window - as an intimate and appropriate part of the composition.

Hello Ryan,
You probably realized that I am not Anglophone. So, "Goldilocks" did not mean anything to me. And when I don't understand something, I have that tendency to look for information. So, here I was, looking in the WWW for Goldilocks. The Web is a tremendous tool of our era, since in a few clicks here and there, I realized "Ah! It's Boucle d'or!" Not remembering well the story, I did read it again.
... No wonder it takes me ages to do a critique! :))
Were you in your car? There is some fuzziness in the left bottom corner. But nothing very disturbing. I am just curious. For me, what makes definitively the photo, it is that pink lady with golden curls! :)
Thanks for the smile!

Aren't they something ... and you want to touch them - but we know better :) I like that you have included the car with the photo-taking girl showing the excitement that was in the air and I know this experience myself and how you forget everything around you ... sometimes also the dangers! The workshop is amazing too ... Excellent! Barbara.

Hello Ryan,I like the spontaneity of this shot;when you see the bears you just have to aim and shoot! No rehearsals!
Excellent quality.I like the composition including the other photographer taking her chances.
Thanks too for the workshop.

Hi Ryan,
I had to think about that title, since I'm not a native English speaker and I couln't get the title at first. But now I do. :-)
I really like the composition with the out of focus photographer in the background. Very nice to see those animals in the wild and a very good note as well!!

Dennis

Belle photo de cette maman avec ses oursons, comme au Canada ou j' ai assisté a ce genre de scène ou ils traverse la route, cela est très photographié car chez nous, les ours on n' en a que dans les parcs ou quand on est tout petit dans son lit.

I really like the fairytale reference, the blond girl couldnt have come at a better time.
I am kind of surprised you can approach them so closely and live to tell about it.

Discovering your gallery, I do a first stop at this shot... nicely realized, with a well adapted DOF. So you were in the car that was before. Strong realization... Geraldine

Dear Ryan,
how lovely...what an extraordinary moment it must have been...if only it could always be like that...people and nature living in harmony, giving each of them enough space and respecting the needs...
I like it that you included this photographer in the frame. Compliments.

Beautiful photo ! Title is very clever seen your composition ! I like this composition as I think I would have first think of cropping the car but the photo is such better like that (despite the fact that I hate this sparkling useless 4x4...;). It's good to learn with other's photos.
Your note is highly interessing. The WS photo is really good as well. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Another great shot Ryan!
I only saw one bear during last summer's trip back home to Canada. We were just on the outskirts of a small town when I spotted a dark brown object running on the side of the road. I asked my uncle to slow down and pull over to the side of the highway, ran back to my camera bag and pulled out the Sigma- only to get some shots of it's arse as it high-tailed it up the hillside. Thankfully it did finally stop to look back, but unfortunately it was at quite a distance- and I wasn't too happy with the results.
I did however get some great shots of an elk. I was probably much close then was safe to be, however I got some great shots of it- one of which is posted on TE.
The composition here is excellent, really close to the action- sharp detail and I like the inclusion of the woman leaning out the window as it really conveys a common scene in Yellowstone (people rubber-necking from their cars to see the wildlife).
Another beauty Ryan,
- Dan
Just read your note- She's a bit thin for a grizzly- I thought they were brown bears haha.

Hi Ryan,
Although you seem to have gotten a closer shot here, I much prefer the WS for its lovely environment; but I'm clearly alone with this opinion. In any case, both are exciting photos to me; having chased grizzlies in Alaska. The story is fascinating.
