Cedar Breaks NM

Cedar Breaks is one of my favorite spots to visit. It may be because it is only a forty minute drive from the house. Or that not as many people visit the area as the more famous Bryce Canyon & Zion (although more people are discovering the place every year). Whatever, whenever there is a cloud in the sky during the summer months I try to make my way to its rim.

Cedar Breaks is a large ampitheather, several miles across, on the rim of a mountain. Erosion has exposed the rainbow colors of the limestone cliffs, the cliffs falling some thousand feet or more from the tops to the valley below.

It is a fairly harsh environment. Winds and snow in the winter close the road to the area from late October through May- some years as late as June. Those who like to cross country ski or have snow mobiles, can visit the park during those times.

This photo was taken just as the last rays were lighting up the rim, giving it an even darker color. While I love Bryce for a sunrise, Cedar Breaks is the place to be to see the sun set.

This a stitch of two photos to give a little more feeling of the vastness of the area.

The ridges pop out of my screen. Fantastic colors. Did you try to take any tele shots?

Hello Allan,
This is a very impressive photograph and stitching job. The lighting, sharpness, and myriad of forms, colors and textures are fabulous. You deserve much more credit than you have received so far. This isn't the first or the last greatly underrated Trek Earth photograph that I have seen posted. This is fantastic work! Any chance that you are related to the late actor and stuntman Richard Farnsworth? He was one of my favorites.
Stan

A good friend of mine photographed Cedar Breaks and introduced me to it when I'd never heard of it before. Your picture is exceptional!

Hi Allan
What a nice capture. The fine detail and the colours are amazing. I will have to keep this place in mind if I'm ever back your way.
