Photographer’s Note
Today's evening temperature: 5°, felt like -5°F. I think it was the coldest day of this winter.
From wikipedia:
Winter in Chicago proves variable and fickle, but even in mild winters one will experience bouts of cold weather. The average Chicago winter produces 38.0 inches (94 cm) of snow. This is just an average; Chicago winters have produced between 9.8 and 89.7 inches (25cm and 221cm) of snow. Snow tends to fall in light accumulations of around 2 inches (5 cm), but about once per year Chicago experiences a storm that can produce 10 to 14 inches (25cm to 35cm) of snow in one day. Unlike across Lake Michigan in western Michigan or in northern Indiana, Chicago rarely gets lake-effect snow because prevailing westerlies that cross the region pick up moisture from Lake Michigan after passing Chicago. Rare northeasterly winds during the winter may deposit the sort of snowfall that one associates with nearby snowbelt cities such as Grand Rapids, Michigan, Kalamazoo, Michigan, and South Bend, Indiana with the more usual westerly winds. Temperatures can vary wildly within the span of one week, but extended periods of temperatures below 32°F (0°C) are not uncommon in January and February. The temperature in January averages about 29°F (-2°C) in the afternoon, and 14°F (-10°C) at night. Temperatures can be expected to drop below 0°F (-18°C) on 15 days throughout the winter season.

hello, henryk
nice weather report from chicago. lovely city scenery. is that view really from tonight? im asking because from the photo it's not clear whether the lake surface is ice or water. given -5F, i assume it should be ice.
in any case, beautiful, frosty sight. thanks for sharing.
regards,
kristaps

An amazing shot to be sure!!!
I only wish that the green light on top of that one building wasn't so glaringly bright. Thankfully it doesn't distract from the OVERALL image.
Beautiful.

Aah, come on, if it's that cold already a 10°F difference cannot feel any worse. I love what the long expo has done to the ice in the fg, great timing with the blue hour, do I see slight cw lean?

A very impressive 'blue hour' photograph, Henryk, with the ice on the lake providing an interesting foreground. However, if I had been composing this I would have taken advantage of your wide angle lens to move a little closer to the ice and have the horizon higher in the frame. It would also have been nice to see this at 800 pixels (but maybe you had to reduce the size in order to maintain quality). Cheers . . . David

This is indeed a beautiful shot Henryk. The time of day is brilliant, and I salute you in your quest for photographs despite the cold weather.
I really like the foreground made up of ice, which makes your shot of the skyline stand out, and become unique.

David

Tylko ty mogles w taka pogode ruszyc dupe i pojsc robic zdjecia w downtown. Nic, kazdy ma jakies zboczenia. Ja wolalem polezec sobie w cieplym lozeczku przytulony do cieplego ciala znanej nam niewiasty. Zdjec nie mam, ale przynajmniej dupa mi nie zmarzla. Zdjecie fajne. Wow, wow, wow. Trzymka.

beatiful view of chicago, but the horizon line is not really flat. The ice blocks are magnificent. Geraldine

A great capture and contrast of nature and man-made structure and time element.

Hi Henryk,
I had to look up the 5 and -5 Farenheit, only knowing about Celcius. But both are extremely cold to me!!! :-) I heard it before about Chicago and mostly in the following hint: "Never fly over Chicago between November and March is you don't really have to" - since there seem to be so many delays and sometimes the airport is closed for days... Nice shot! Wonderful colours. But what has been your exposure? 0 seconds? :-)
Greetings! Dennis

Hello Henryk,
very good one. The unusual foreground makes this quite common picture very interesting and gives it more depth. Good colour contrast too. Looking at it - I am freezing.
Bravo

Henryk,
This is a great blue hour shot of one of my favorite cities. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and DOF. The reflection adds nice depth and balance for the buildings. The ice flow in the foreground adds a nice touch to the shot and gives it frigid feel.

Asa

This one is fantastic too - as many others in your wonderful gallery but I went for this one because I love the soft pink ice in your foreground and again this warm element in the back with the lights of the town. Beautiful and different, wonderful work ... and I don't mind some "minuses" ... Barbara.
