At the beginning of last week there was an unusually heavy snowfall on the mountains near Los Angeles, turning them white not just at the tips, as usually happens when a storm passes through, but well down the side. Snow fell down to maybe 1200 m (4000 feet) elevation or less, instead of the usual 1800 m (6000 feet) or so. Unfortunately this view was only available for a few hours, and in mid-day light, as clouds covered the mountains by sunset.
On the left side is Mt. Baldy, at 10,064 feet (3,068 m), the highest peak in the San Gabriel Mountains.

Great landscape. Amazing light clouds and colors. Very good framing.

I Like this panorama version....represent the whole of LA II.

This is a really well framed and executed panoramic. Top marks all round I say! Maybe the sky is a little flat because of all those clouds but that is really nitpicking. I love it.

Great compo, I love the snow and clouds behind the skyline! The skyline and the foreground with its green gives a good contrast to the "cold" seeming background. Well done!

When i ever come back to Los Angeles you must bring me here (probably again your back yard) because i like these kind of images so much. It doesn't look like huge city at all, The mountains are much bigger and that is really the strong point here. A stunning picture....how it wished it was mine..!!!
Have a nice day, Henk

All of a sudden - this giant of the giants - LOS ANGELES - it's not so giant, dwarfed by the majestic mountain range !
Wonderful stuff, dear Ken...
Especially - it's large version !!!
It's a really good babe - isn't it ?

This is a wonderful panorama, full of great details. I really like the three layers: the flat foreground dotted with trees and houses, the skyscrapers in the middle that seem like steel mountains themselves, and then the beautiful mountains in the background. It is a very interesting contrast to see Los Angeles with snow-capped peaks behind it.

Very interesting note for such an incredible view!
The sharpness is very good, though it seems conditions weren't optimum. TFS!

Great shot. You don't see this often, especially this clear. in fact amazingly clear for the distance. The San Gabriel Mountains look really close in this image. I like the off center composition too. Really well done.

Fantastic panoramic view. The white mountain on the background is really beautiful. The picture appears in lays which makes it even more interesting: the green on the foreground, the gray city in the middle and finally the wonderfull white mountains on back.

Great shot Ken! The compression from using the long lens really makes the buildings of the city seem like they are right next to the mountains. Great combination to give ths more impact, and I like the long horizontal frame too, which gives this a real panoramic feel.
kyrosteinius (332) 2008-01-23 12:38
I appreciate your shot, because of the buildings which seem to be from nowhere. If I had to critic, I would say that snow of the left side is a bit surexpose. TFS,

Unreal landscape Ken!
The city just front of the splendid mountains.

What an unusual view of L.A....
It's very interessting.
Just a critics: I would have like to see a much more larger version than your large version (:-))

you got the rare moment of snow on the mountains and clear air conditions. I have already seen something similar as a photography from LA, but never were lucky enough to see it with my own eyes. Nice to have a house with that POV too.

Hello Ken! I have not overseen your "clear" version but sometimes I get lost and I guess I should try to be more efficient but we all know what databank TE meanwhile is and it is easy to jump around (at least for me). Amazing the clarity and I was actually never aware how high the mountains are that are almost in your "front yard". What an opportunity to go out there and hike for a few hours but probably the traffic is another thing you have to master, I mean where not when it comes to big towns. Thanks for bringing this in. Los Angeles is surrounded by great beauty. Enjoy your Saturday, almost dinner time here ... Barbara.
