[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I'm posting this shot of the face of Mendenhall Glacier, a few miles out of Juneau, Alaska, not because it has any particular photographic merits, but more because I wanted you all to see how good a VR lens can be. This pic was taken (without a tripod!) at the maximum focal length of 300mm when I was perhaps 3/4 of a mile from the ice: I merely adjusted the sharpness, due to cropping from the original, and resizing for TE.
To give an idea of the scale here, the central blue ice pillar is probaly between 60-80 feet high.

Hello Jeff,

I am delighted to see this shot. As the great German physicist Werner Heisenberg observed, "Never underestimate how much pleasure it gives a person to see/hear what he already knows." And I have been to Mendhall Glacier, and can appreciate the scale. More importantly, I use a Nikon D70, and I am impressed by the quality of the tripodless delivering such remarkable resolution. I've thought seriously about getting that lens, or upscaling the camera to the D200 or D300.

The deep blue of the compressed ice, the air completely squeezed out, makes this a memorable photo.

Warm regards from Virginia,

Bulent

Hi Jeff,
The deep blue colour of ice is simply amazing. I guess such tones can only be seen on real glacier ice. Makes me speechless. Thanks for the note about the scale. Yes, it's impossible to see at the picture.
Kari
