Photographer’s Note
Fencing that divides the public area and a new nature preserve (bird sanctuary) at Montrose Point on Lake Michigan in Chicago. Montrose Point (and neighboring areas) is a remarkable piece of beach area - apparently it is on the migratory route of many species of birds (over 300 species identified, I think 322 as of last count). Birds on their fall and spring migration stop here to rest, seek shelter and feed. So the city, the park district, birders and volunteers have make sure that birds are well taken cared of when they land here. A former army barracks area, the "Magic Hedge" has been planted with trees and bushes. Also remakably, a dune is forming on the beach area and plants that have not been seen in Chicago for more than 50 years have colonized this newly forming dune. Bilingual signs are also posted to educate the public on birds and habitat that is forming. Also, there are stones and bird baths that release trickles of water for the bird to enjoy.
It's really incredible that this piece of birding hotspot is right in the middle of the city. This morning for example, 27 species of birds have been identified in Montrose Point.
